Generic diagnosis.

Afrotropical species of Mesembrius s.s. (i.e. excluding representatives of the subgenus Mesembrius Vadonimyia, cf. Introduction) have the following combination of diagnostic characters: postpronotum pilose; compound eye bare (Figs 46 - 82); wing vein R4+5 strongly sinuate; wing vein M1 processive distally (Figs 127 - 150); wing cell r1 open (rarely, cell r1 is narrowly open as in Fig. 142); thorax with katepimeron conspicuously pilose; and metabasitarsus with basoventral globuliferous setae (e.g. Figs 185, 196).
