Phanaeus chalcomelas (Perty, 1830)
Onitis chalcomelas Perty, 1830: 40 (original description). Type locality: Brazil: one of the localities visited by the collectors of the type series, Spix and Martius, in the Amazon (see Papavero 1971). The type locality was incorrectly said by Perty (1830) to be in the then-provinces (now states) of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, but this exclusively Amazonian species does not occur there (Edmonds 1994; Edmonds & Zídek 2012). See Cupello (2024) for the analogous case of Gromphas aeruginosa (Perty, 1830) . Name-bearing type: a single known syntype (ZSM) (cited as “typus” by Scherer [1983] and “ holotype?” by Edmonds [1994]), not examined.
Distribution
Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
