Diagnosis. Hogna subaustralis can be distinguished from the remaining South American Hogna species by the dark brown ventral coloration of femora I–II, male palps with distal end of median apophysis strongly curved and with terminal apophysis sclerotised (Figs 2–3), and by an anterior enlargement of the longitudinal bar of the median septum and the flattened atrium in the female epigynum (Fig. 4).
Description. Male (Cajamarca, Celendin, MHNSM). Carapace dark brown with a median and a pair of marginal, longitudinal pale bands and three radial pale bands, all covered by whitish setae (Fig. 1). Chelicerae reddishbrown, with yellowish setae. Sternum, labium, endites, and coxae dark brown. Legs: brownish dorsally; dark brown ventrally. Abdomen: dorsum light brown with a blackish arrow-shaped spot flanked by a pair of wide longitudinal pale bands (Fig. 1); venter dark brown. Spinnerets brownish. Chelicerae: promargin with three equidistant teeth, the median one largest; retromargin with three large, equal and equidistant teeth. Total length 15.50. Carapace length 8.78, width 6.88. Eyes: anterior row slightly procurve. Diameters: AME 0.36; ALE 0.32; PME 0.85; PLE 0.62; interdistances: AME–AME 0.13; AME–ALE 0.12; PME–PME 0.43; PME–PLE 0.72; PLE–PLE 1.66. Palp: tibia about 2.5 times longer than wide; cymbium about 2 times longer than wide; median apophysis with short ventral spur in retrolateral view; terminal apophysis sclerotised, laminar (Fig. 2); subterminal apophysis membranous, short, curved dorsally.
Female (Cajamarca, Celendin, MHNSM). Coloration as male, except the dorsum of abdomen without the longitudinal pale bands. Chelicerae as male. Total length 16.00. Carapace length 8.40, width 6.70. Eyes: anterior row as in male. Diameters: AME 0.34; ALE 0.30; PME 0.74; PLE 0.52; interdistances: AME–AME 0.18; AME–ALE 0.15; PME–PME 0.42; PME–PLE 0.64; PLE–PLE 1.60. Epigynum: median septum with longitudinal bar slightly widened anteriorly; transverse bar shorter than the longitudinal, with lateral ends rounded and not dilated; atrium flattened, smooth, and narrower than longitudinal bar (Fig. 4); hoods small and rounded (Fig. 5); spermathecae with large, transversely elongated base; head of spermathecae oval; stalk short and curved; copulatory ducts elongated and partially covered by base of spermathecae in dorsal view; fertilization ducts straight and curved dorsally at base.
Variation. Ten males: total length 15.00–19.20; carapace length 8.10–10.50; femur I length 6.80–8.72. Ten females: total length 15.50–19.55; carapace length 8.40–9.90; femur I length 6.00–7.80.
