Rhogogastera opacella Mocsáry, 1909

A junior subjective synonym of Tenthredo (Eurogaster) stulta Jakowlew, 1891, syn. nov.

TYPES. Rhogogastera opacella Mocsáry, 1909: 18 –19. Syntype (s) Ƥ, “Sibiria orientalis: Gorbitza”. Lectotype Ƥ, hereby designated (Fig. 31). Type locality: “Sibiria or. Gorbitza” [= Russia: Zabajkal'skij kraj: Gorbitsa].

DISCUSSION. The lectotype (Fig. 31) does not represent a member of Rhogogaster, but belongs to T. stulta . This species is rather variable in colour, and the lectotype of R. opacella is a very pale specimen. The new synonymy is unexpected, as Benson (1965: 106) marked R. opacella as a taxon of which he examined “the type ” in the course of his studies on Rhogogaster . He treated Rhogogaster opacella as a separate group within the genus. The only available type specimen in the HNHM collection bears no label by Benson. It seems very likely that Benson was in error regarding the claimed type examination. Benson (1965) did not indicate that he had examined the types of any other Rhogogaster species described by Mocsáry. The identity of R. opacella sensu Benson remains uncertain. Most likely the records of R. opacella (Japan, Korea, Mongolia, China, Siberia) refer to various Rhogogaster species. Zhelochovtsev & Zinovjev (1992) treated R. kudiana Rohwer, 1925 without explanation as a synonym of R. opacella (auct.), but this treatment seems to be unjustified.
