Material examined. Holotype NHM UK 2013.1076 and 3 smaller paratypes NHM UK 2013.1077-1079. Stn 135: Atlantic, Southeast (off Tristan da Cuhna); 658 m. Stn 164A: Pacific, Southwest (off Sydney); 2195 m. Stn 169: Pacific, Southwest (off East Cape, New Zealand); 1280 m. The station from where the holotype was collected is not stated.

Supplementary descriptions. Newman & Ross (1971) (as Arcoscalpellum buccinum sp. nov.) and Foster (1978).

Distribution. Indian Ocean, Eastern and Western; Pacific, Southwest and Western Central; Atlantic, Southeast and Eastern central. Known depth range 110 to 2397 m.

Remarks. This species is known from several widely dispersed locations and shows a great degree of apparent intraspecific variability. Further study is required to establish the boundaries of this species.
