Polietina prima (Couri & Machado, 1990)

Cyrtoneurina prima Couri & Machado, 1990: 659 . Holotype female (MNRJ); six paratypes females (MNRJ). Type locality: Represa dos Ciganos ( Parque Nacional da Tijuca), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil .

Polietina nigra Couri & de Carvalho, 1996: 825 . Holotype male (MNRJ), 15 paratypes females (MNRJ). Type locality: Una, Bahia, Brazil. Syn. nov.

Remarks. Polietina prima was described by Couri & Machado (1990) in Cyrtoneurina Giglio-Tos, 1893 based on seven females collected in Represa dos Ciganos (Parque Nacional da Tijuca), Rio de Janeiro. Couri & Pamplona (1997) transferred these species to Polietina and re-described it based on type-material (MNRJ). Nihei & de Carvalho (2007: 489) included a short description of the male of P. prima, indicating that marginal spines process of cercal plate has downwardly orientated spines. Polietina nigra was described based on 16 specimens, 1 male (holotype) and 14 females (paratypes), from Una, Bahia and 1 female (paratype) from Rio de Janeiro. For the present manuscript, we analyzed male specimens previously identified as P. nigra and P. prima . We are not able to find any conspicuous difference between them. The examined male genitalia of both species is very similar to drawings made by Couri & de Carvalho (1996: figs. 1 – 5), even when compared with figures of phallus and associated structures in Nihei & de Carvalho 2003: figs 1 – 2, where slight difference can be seen in the shape of pregonite. Also, the ovipositor of Polietina prima and Polietina nigra are very similar (Couri & Machado 1990: fig. 2; Couri & Carvalho 1996: figs. 6 – 7). The only difference in adult chaetotaxy is a variation of the number of setulae on the anteroventral face of the hind tibia, which is used in the key for the identification of species (Nihei & de Carvalho 2007). In the present study, this is considered an intraspecific variation.

Polietina prima has a wide area of distribution (Löwenberg-Neto & de Carvalho 2013), and all specimens were collected in forested sites. It is a synanthropic species collected with banana mixed with ‘ rapadura’, a Brazilian sweet made from sugar cane (D’Almeida 1993). Polietina prima is larviparous, with third instar larvae found in the female abdomen (Couri & de Carvalho 1996).
