Genus Osteomugil Luther (1997)
Remarks. Luther (1977) described the new genus Osteomugil relied on single specimen of Mugil cunnesius Valenciennes 1836 based on characters including adipose tissue covering the iris, number of pyloric caeca, osteology of vertebral column and the visibility of the maxilla. He stated in his remarks that the new genus possesses some common characters to Valamugil . Senou (1988), Thomson (1997), and Ghasemzadeh (1998) accepted the Genus Osteomugil as a synonym of Genus Valamugil . Durand et al (2012) and Eschmeyer and Fong (2015) accepted Osteomugil as a valid Genus on the basis of molecular studies.
