Diagnosis. Mouth is terminal; thin lips without fleshy lobes on lower jaw. Lower lip is projected forward. Ciliform or setiform teeth in one or more rows present in each lip. Nostrils nearer to each other than to eye or lip. Maxilla curved downwards and visible at the corner of closed mouth.

Pectoral axillary scale is small or absent. Pectoral fin inserted at level of upper rim of eye horizontally. Anal fin has III spines.

Remarks. Owing to the molecular phylogeny of Mugilidae all Liza spp. found in Indo-Pacific region belongs to genus Planiliza Whitley, 1945 (Durand et al., 2012 b, Xia et al., 2016).
