Euwallacea posticus (Eichhoff): new combination
Xyleborus posticus Eichhoff, 1868: 281 .
Xyleborus posticus Eichhoff: Wood & Bright, 1992: 764, cotype.
Specimens examined. Mexico (Reitter coll., “cotype” No. 53842, Eichhoff det., USNM), Honduras, Atlantida Department. Pico Bonito (17 indiv.), CURLA station (28 indiv.) (C. Storer coll. 2013, JH).
Comments. Eichhoff’s type specimen is lost (Wood & Bright 1992), but a “cotype” apparently identified by Eichhoff is deposited in the USNM collection (microphotograph examined). The species is transferred from Xyleborus to Euwallacea based on its well-supported placement within the new genus in the presented molecular phylogeny, and based on the agreement of morphological characters. It is is similar to other Euwallacea specis, particularly E. andamanensis (Blandford) . Note that the 12th issue of the Berliner Entomologische Zeitschrift, in which X. posticus was described, is dated 1868, but it was actually published in 1869 (D. E. Bright, pers. comm.).
