Arrenurus (Arrenurus) abbreviator Berlese, 1888

Arrenurus (Rhinophoracarus) hazarensis Özkan & Erman, 1990, nov. syn.

Records from Turkey: Elazıġ Province (Özkan & Erman 1991; Erman & Özkan 2000; “ A. (Rhinophoracarus) hazarensis ” Özkan & Erman 1990a; “ A. (Rhinophoracarus) hazarensis ” Erman & Özkan 2000; “ A. (Rhinophoracarus) hazarensis ” Erman et al. 2006b); Kayseri Province (Özkan et al. 1993, 1996); Afyon Province (Özkan et al. 2003; Boyacı & Özkan 2003).

Remarks: Arrenurus hazarensis was described from Elazıġ Province by Özkan & Erman (1990a) based on the two juvenile males (indicated by weak sclerotization), and due to the incomplete dorsal furrow, extending onto lateral sides of idiosoma, erroneously attributed to Rhinophoracarus. In fact, this species agrees with the juvenile form of Arrenurus abbreviator in all important details (e.g., dorsal furrow incomplete, palp stocky, capitulum with short rostrum, fourth leg with numerous swimming setae and petiole with two rounded chitin extentions posterior-laterally). Thus, A. hazarensis should be considered a junior synonym of A. a bbreviator. Habitat: Lakes, ponds.

Distribution: Western Palaearctic.
