Genus Paramerina Fittkau, 1962

Paramerina Fittkau, 1962: 317; Hamilton et al. 1969: 10 (as subgenus of Zavrelimyia).

Type species: Chironomus cingulatus Walker, 1856, by original designation.

Emended diagnosis. Larva. Maxillary palp with usually 2, but occasionally 1 basal segment ( P. togavicea). Posterior parapod usually with simple claws only, occasionally with some claws teethed along inner margin (Nearctic P. smithae), or bifid claw ( P. togavicea).

Remarks. Generic diagnoses are given by Fittkau (1962), Beck & Beck (1966), Roback (1971), Harrison (1978), and Murray & Fittkau (1989) for the adult; and Fittkau (l. c.) and Fittkau & Murray (1986) for the pupa. The diagnoses in Fittkau (l. c.), Fittkau & Roback (1983), Kowalyk (1985) and Epler (2001) for the larva should be emended to agree with Japanese species, but the characters may obscure the boundaries between Paramerina and Zavrelimyia .
