Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Gulf of Mexico), Colombia, and Brazil (Ceará, Paraíba, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul) (Bordin 1987; Melo 1996, 2008, 2010; Almeida et al. 2007a; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Ubatuba (Santana et al. 2004b; Hirose 2009; Colavite et al. 2016). This species was recorded in Brazil as Stenocionops furcata and Pericera cornuta (see Coelho et al. 2008 for references). The taxonomic status and the relationship of this species with the congener S. coelatus (A. Milne-Edwards, 1878) and other genera were studied by Colavite et al.
