Western Atlantic—USA (Massachusetts to Florida) and Brazil (Amapá, Pará, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul) (Rathbun 1918; Righi 1967; Williams 1984; Abele & Kim 1986; Bordin 1987; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Melo 1996, 1998; Coelho 1997; Barros & Pimentel 2001; Almeida et al. 2007b; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Coelho et al. 2008).

Remarks. Previous records in the coast of São Paulo include Ubatuba (Bertini et al. 2004). Recently, Palacios-Theil & Felder (2020) erected a new genera to receive some Pinnixa species including the genus Rathbunixa in which Pinnixa sayana was allocated. It is frequently found in burrows of polychaete Arenicola (Coelho & Ramos 1972; Powers 1977; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Melo 1998) and probably with the callianassid Lepidophthalmus siriboia (Almeida et al. 2010) .
