Distribution. Western Atlantic—Costa Rica to Brazil (Abrolhos, Piauí, Maranhão, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Bahia, Alagoas, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo). Eastern Pacific—Mexico (Lower California) to Chile (Valparaiso) (Rathbun 1925; Garth 1946; Lemaitre 1981; Retamal 1981; Coelho & Torres 1993; Melo 1996; Hendrickx 1999; Marcano & Bolaños 2001; Young & Serejo 2005; Almeida et al. 2007b; Almeida & Coelho 2008; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo state include Ubatuba (Hiyodo et al. 1994; Alves et al. 2012b as A. dissimulatus). This species was previously reported also as Acanthonyx dissimulatus and A. scutiformis (Tamburus & Mantelatto 2016b) . However, these authors synonymized them to A. petiverii . Sequences accession number (GenBank): CCDB 760—16S (KC695764), COI (KC695772) (Tamburus & Mantelatto 2016a).
