Distribution. Western Atlantic—Brazil (Ceará, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo), Uruguay, and Argentina. Eastern Pacific—USA (California), Mexico, and Chile (Melo 1996; Bertini & Fransozo 2004; Bertini et al. 2004; Braga et al. 2005; Pachelle et al. 2016; Spivak et al. 2019).
Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo state include Ubatuba (Bertini & Fransozo 2004; Bertini et al. 2004, 2010) and Caraguatatuba (Braga et al. 2005). In general, the date for this species is often cited as 1834, but the correct reference is 1833, as firstly used in H. Milne Edwards’ (1833) description.
