Type species: Gymnodamaeus plokosus Woolley & Higgins, 1973 a
Diagnosis: Gymnodamaeidae with ventral plate lacking both anogenital bridge and lateral pits; genital plates with smooth median margin and bearing 7 pairs of setae, seta g 2 inserted posteriad g 1; 2 pairs of adanal setae. Legs without retrotecta on distal segments, femur IV with 3 setae. Prodorsum with spherical pustules, without X-shaped cerotegumental ridges; sensillus (bo) with long stalk and elongate, barbed head; bothridial rim simple, bothridial ridges arising mediad bothridia, interlamellar seta (in) spine-like, inserted on apophysis and forming enantiophysis with median prodorsal tubercle (Fig. 30); exobothridial seta (ex) inserted posteriad in; rostral seta (ro) inserted at similar level to lamellar seta; lamellar seta (le) sinuate, inserted at steep anterior base of transverse prelamellar ridge (Fig. 31); pedotectum II produced into a point laterally (Fig. 31). Notogaster flattened, with shallow rim (Fig. 27) and anterior field of coarse tubercles (Figs. 29–30), without radiating cerotegumental folds or posterior median nipple, with 5 pairs of setae (h 1-2, p 1-3), setae h 1 inserted on posterior folds of notogastral rim, others sessile or on short apophysis; cerotegument with spherical pustules (Fig. 28), raised ridges or cells not present; sejugal tubercle short, spur-like.
