Range:— Costa Rica to Bolivia (CO, LP) and western Brazil.

Ecology:— Common; terrestrial in humid forests; 700–2000 m.

Notes:— This higher-elevation representative of the species group around Saccoloma inaequale was elevated to species rank by Rojas-Alvarado (2010) under the name S. nigrescens . Schwartsburd (2022) restricted that name to plants from southeastern Brazil and proposed the new name S. hieronymi for the populations from Costa Rica to Bolivia. These had previously been called S. inaequale var. caudatum Hieron., but since the name caudatum is already occupied in Saccoloma, a new name was required.
