Diagnosis. This species is similar in external characters and male genitalia to H. pastor, but differs from the latter in having very shiny dorsum, very fine microsculpture consisting of dense transverse lines on elytral disc in baso-medial portion, deeper elytral striae, less expanded punctation of elytra (inner intervals impunctate apically) and much longer metepisterna. The longitudinal spiny patch of internal sac of aedeagus (Figs 34–35) is divided into two or three separate parts, as opposed to that of H. pastor, which is continuous (Figs 32–33). Body length 9.9–12.5 mm.
Distribution. China: the southern and south-eastern parts. The species was previously recorded from Zhejiang, Hunan, Fujian, Guizhou, Guangxi, Sichuan and Yunnan (Kataev et al. 2003; Liang & Liu 2007). We provided here the new material from Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangxi. It is recorded here from Anhui and Jiangxi provinces for the first time.
The species is also known from Vietnam (Kataev 1997).
Remarks. Harpalus muciulus was described from several localities in Sichuan (Leibo, Gulin, Emei Mt., and Ya’an) as close to H. simplicidens Schauberger. Examination of the original description and the paratype revealed that this taxon is conspecific with H. fokienensis .
