Genus Chrysogorgia Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864

Diagnosis: Sympodially branched chrysogorgiid, with branches subdividing dichotomously, either arising from a regular single ascending spiral (clockwise or counterclockwise), a fan (planar colony), or two fans emerging from a short main stem (biflabellate colony). Axis with a metallic shine, dark to golden in colour. Most polyps relative large to the size of the branches they sit on, few in number and well separated from one another. Sclerites in the form of spindles, rods and scales with little ornamentation. (Cairns, 2001; Pante & Watling, 2011).

Type species: Chrysogorgia desbonni Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864, by monotypy.
