Type material. Proteides amphion Geyer, 1832 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from “Westindien” [=American continent based on Hübner, [1819]]. Even though Hübners’ type material is supposedly housed at ZMHU, no syntypes of P. amphion were found there. Thus, a male neotype of Proteides amphion is hereby designated, in order to stabilize the identity of this species. The chosen neotype specimen has the same morphological characteristics of the male illustrated by Geyer (1832, pl; [109], figs 631 and 632) and well discussed by Evans (1953), and is deposited at the DZUP with the following labels: / Neotypus / Imperatriz, MA[ranhão, Brazil] 9–VIII–1974 Exc. Depto. Zool./ Neotypus Proteides amphion Geyer, 1832 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/ DZ 25.955/.
Plesioneura compressa Möschler, 1877 was described based on three specimens from the coast and interior of Suriname. Even though Möschlers’ type material is supposedly housed at ZMHU, no syntypes of P. compressa were found there. Thus, a male neotype of Plesioneura compressa is hereby designated, in order to stabilize the identity of this species. The chosen neotype specimen has the same morphological characteristics of the male illustrated by Möschler (1877, pl. 4, fig. 22) and well discussed by Evans (1953), it’s from the same type locality, and is deposited at the DZUP–OM with the following labels: / Neotypus / Suriname 1963/ [OM] 11.935/ Neotypus Plesioneura compressa Möschler, 1877 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/.
Proteides zethos Plötz, 1882 was described based on one specimen [holotype] from Pará [Brazil]. The male holotype is deposited at ZMHU with the following labels: / Holotypus Nr./ 5038/ Pará Sieb[er]/ zethos Pl. Type/.
Aethilla buffumi Weeks, 1906 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from Suapure [Bolivar], Venezuela. Two syntypes specimens (one male and one female) of A. buffumi were found in MCZ. The female syntype has the following labels: 1/1/90 / 733/ SUAPURE VENEZUELA / A G Weeks Collection/ M. C. Z. Type 16684./ Jan.–Jun. 2001 MCZ Image Database/. In order to stabilize the identity of this species, this female specimen is hereby designated lectotype of Aethilla buffumi Weeks, 1906 . The lectotype has a label with the same information published in the original description, and the following labels will also be attached: / Lectotypus / Lectotypus Aethilla buffumi Weeks, 1906 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/. The male specimen is hereby designated paralectotype and the following labels will also be attached: / Paralectotypus / Paralectotypus Aethilla buffumi Weeks, 1906 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/. These labels will be sent to the curator for the collection.
Diagnosis. FW length: males 14–17 mm (n=54) and females 15–18 mm (n=24). Telemiades amphion resembles T. belli Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande, sp. nov. and T. fides, but is distinguished mainly by its geographical distribution from the Amazonas region to south Brazil, while T. belli sp. nov. and T. fides occurs on Central America. Additionally, the following genitalia characters differentiates T. amphion from other species of the “ amphion group”: valva with hook–like distal process, distally slightly curved; lamella antevaginalis with distal margin slightly concave; lamella postvaginalis rounded.
Variation. Specimens vary in size, in the dark spots in FW and HW, in the size of hyaline spots of discal area and in the apical hyaline spot in R 5 –M 1, which in some individuals may be smaller or absent. The male genitalia also vary in size, as well and the posterior margin of the tegumen and the distal process of the tegumen may be larger and less sharp.
Natural history. Telemiades amphion flies throughout the year. Immatures have been reported on Inga pilosula and Zygia cauliflora (Fabaceae) (Moss 1949).
Distribution. This species is distributed in Amazon and interior Atlantic Forest areas, occurring in Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Brazil.
Taxonomic discussion. Hübner, [1819] proposed the name Proteides amphion without giving a description or illustration of the species. Thus, this name is nomen nudum according to Article 12.1 of ICZN. Geyer (1832) mentioned Proteides amphion (which he attributed to Hübner) and gave a brief description of it based on an unknown number of specimens from the “Westindien” [=American continent based on Hübner, [1819]]. By doing so, Geyer (1832) satisfied the ICZN requirements to become the author of the species. After Geyer’s description, the species was transferred to Hesperia (Westwood 1852), Aethilla (Butler 1870), Plesioneura (Herrich–Schäffer 1870), Eudamus (Kirby 1879) and finally to Telemiades (Mabille 1878) .
Plesioneura compressa Möschler, 1877, Proteides zethos Plötz, 1882 and Aethilla buffumi Weeks, 1906 are considered synonyms of T. amphion after Plötz (1882), Godman (1907) and Bell (1933), respectively. The examination of the type material of these species confirms that they are synonyms of T. amphion .
