Shikokuobius japonicus was described from Sakuragi, Tanbara-cho, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. In addition to spurs on the trochanters and prefemora of the 15th leg, small dorsal spurs were seen on the prefemora of legpairs 13 and 14. This species has been used by Edgecombe in several analyses of henicopid phylogenetics as a representative of Northern Hemisphere anopsobiids, and the additional spurs on the posterior legs may suggest it is a basal species of anopsobiid, illustrative of a tendency for the loss of these spurs as a derived characteristic (see Buethobius).
