Camelus bactrianus Linnaeus, 1758 . Syst. Nat., 10th ed., 1:65.

REVIEWED BY: P. Grubb (PG).

TYPE LOCALITY: "Bactria" (= U.S.S.R., Uzbekistan, Bokhara) (domesticated stock) .

DISTRIBUTION: Exists in the wild only in S.W. Mongolia, Kansu, Tsinghai, and Sinkiang (China)(SW); domesticated in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, U.S.S.R., Mongolia, and China.

COMMENT: Includes ferus Przewalski, 1883, based on wild specimen; bactrianus Linnaeus, 1758, has priority (IUK). Produces fertile hybrids with dromedarius; though their distributions merge, breeding is regulated (as all individuals are domesticated in the zone of contact) (IUK). PROTECTED STATUS: U.S. ESA - Endangered as C. ferus (= bactrianus).

ISIS NUMBER: 5301419004001001001.
