Comments. According to Matias (1983), C. pyri has been present in Portugal for a long time but emerged as a pest only in 1977–1978. He also suggested that C. pyrisuga is much less frequent in Portugal than C. pyri, and he drew attention to the possible occurrence of C. pyricola in Portugal. We think that the occurrence of C. bidens is more likely than that of C. pyricola . Matias (1983) described plants with symptoms associated with “pear decline”; the presence of ‘ Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri’ was, however, confirmed only much later in mainland Portugal (Marques 2011; Torres et al. 2014; CABI 2021).
