Coleonyx Gray

The genus Coleonyx includes seven species of terrestrial geckos commonly referred to as banded geckos. These species are found throughout the south-western United States of America and northern Mexico south into Central America to Costa Rica (Klauber 1945).

Phylogenetic relationships for four species within the genus were assessed by Jonniaux and Kumazawa (2008). Among Eublepharidae the karyotype is known for 4 species only: C. switaki (2n = 24; FN = 26) (Murphy 1974), C. variegatus (2n = 32; FN = 32) (Matthey 1933; Porter et al. 1994), Eublepharis macularius (2n = 38; FN = 38) (Gorman 1973), and Goniurosaurus kuroiwae (2n = 24) (Ota et al. 1987).
