Neocarus Chamberlin & Mulaik 1942: 127; Lehtinen 1980: 207 (new diagnosis); Vázquez & Klompen 2009: 24 (new diagnosis).

Type species: Neocarus texanus Chamberlin & Mulaik 1942:127, by original designation.

Etymology: Although there is no information on terminology, is assumed to be “New mite” spelling, from Latin neo (new) + Greek akari (mite).

Note: The genus name has been incorrectly spelled as Neoacarus by some authors (Armas 2010: 64; Bernardi et al. 2012: 53, 2013a: 789, 2014: 55; Walter & Proctor 1998: 49).
