The genus Lanista is poorly studied and has never been taxonomically revised. Based on the morphology of the stridulatory apparatus, head, and male cerci it appears to be closely related to two other African Copiphorini, Plastocorypha Karsch, 1896 and Lanistoides Sjöstedt, 1913, the latter recently reinstated as a valid genus by Heller (2014). A thorough phylogenetic analysis will likely reveal a close relationship of these three taxa, perhaps resulting in generic synonymies. Within the currently recognized boundaries of Lanista four species are included: L. annulicornis, L. affinis Bolivar, 1906, L. crassicollis Bolivar, 1906, and L. varelai Bolivar, 1906 . Examination of all relevant type specimens and additional material of Lanista spp. from West and southern Africa by the authors indicates that this species list requires a rearrangement.
