(Figs 34–43)
Type material. Holotype female [NZAC] on slide (Fig. 34) labeled: 1. “ NEW ZEALAND CO Watts Rock, 1200 m, Jan 1981 ”; 2. “ Tussock /grasses, Juncus, Sphagnum ”; 3. “ Swept J. S. Noyes, E. W. Paratype: same data as the holotype [1Ƌ on slide, NZAC]. The type locality is on South Island .
Description. FEMALE (holotype). Body dark brown except petiole light brown; appendages brown. Head (Fig. 35) slightly wider than high, with faint mesh-like sculpture; face with shallow, inconspicuous subtorular grooves. Antenna (Fig. 37) with scape, including short radicle, 3.2× as long as wide, without cross-ridges; pedicel smooth, longer than any funicular and 1.8× as long as wide; F1 the shortest and F2 the longest funiculars, F4 as long as F5 and shorter than F3, length to width ratios of funiculars: F1—1.4, F2—3.5; F3—2.3; F4—1.7; F5—1.4; F6—1.8, all funiculars without mps; clava 2.5× as long as wide, shorter than combined length of 5 preceding flagellomeres but longer than combined length of preceding 4 flagellomeres, with 7 mps. Mesosoma about 1.5× as long as wide; pronotum divided mediolongitudinally, with reticulate sculpture; mesoscutum wider than long, with notaular grooves; scutellum a little shorter than mesoscutum, with campaniform sensilla closer to anterior margin than to posterior margin and widely separated from each other; mesoscutum and scutellum with faint mesh-like sculpture; scutellum with a row of small frenal foveae (Fig. 36); propodeum smooth, with a complete median carina (Fig. 36). Fore wing (Fig. 38) 4.5× as long as wide; marginal vein short, with 1 dorsal macrochaeta; disc slightly infumate, densely setose beyond venation, with discal setae originating behind apex of submarginal vein, many of them 30–60 µm long, and thus fore wings appearing “hairy”; longest marginal seta 1.4× greatest width of wing. Hind wing almost 25× as long as wide; disc slightly infumate, with several setae; longest marginal seta 5.0× greatest width of wing. Metacoxa almost smooth, a little shorter than petiole. Petiole (Fig. 39) about 2.9× as long as wide, with anterolateral “wings” (their margins serrate) and fine transverse lines dorsally. Ovipositor occupying 0.9 length of gaster, not exserted beyond gastral apex, and 1.1× length of metatibia.
Measurements of the holotype (µm). Mesosoma: 267; petiole: 100; gaster: 333; ovipositor: 297. Scape: 115; pedicel: 55; F1: 21; F2: 45; F3: 30; F4: 27; F5: 27; F6: 35; clava: 152. Fore wing: 732:161; longest marginal seta: 230. Hind wing: 590:24; longest marginal seta: 121.
MALE (paratype). Petiole (Fig. 41) brown, but otherwise similar to female except for the normal sexually dimorphic features of antenna and genitalia. Antenna (Fig. 40) with scape 3.2× long as wide. Fore wing (Fig. 42) 5.5× as long as wide; longest marginal seta 1.6× greatest width of wing. Genitalia (Fig. 43) typical for species of P. ( Polynema) (Triapitsyn & Fidalgo 2006), 164 µm long; digitus with 2 small hooks apically .
Diagnosis. Both sexes of P. baronessa are characterized by the following unique combination of features: face with shallow subtorular grooves (Fig. 35); pronotum with reticulate sculpture; fore wing “hairy”, with dense, long, discal setae and long marginal setae (Figs 38, 42); anterolateral “wings” of petiole serrate (Figs 39, 41).
Etymology. The species name is a noun in apposition; it means baroness in Russian.
