Pelecorhynchus vulpes (Macquart, 1850)

Diagnosis and comments. Body color reddish-brown. Scutum reddish-brown with abundant orange-rufous hairs, without longitudinal stripes. Scutellum reddish-brown with abundant hairs of the same color on the distal margin. Pleura with long abundant orange-rufous hairs, anepisternum with tufts of long whitish hairs. Wing slightly infuscated orange. Abdomen with orange-rufous hairs, without spots (Fig. 50). This species differs from all other species of Pelecorhynchus in the reddish-brown color of the body and scutum without two parallel longitudinal stripes. The Australian species of the fulvus -group have an orange abdomen but the scutum has two parallel stripes.
Description. Female (N = 5; length: 17.0 – 21.5 mm). Head: eyes dark brown, bare. Frons brown, parallel-sided with orange-rufous hairs. Parafacial with short orange-rufous hairs. Ocellar triangle with three ocelli (Fig. 51). Posterior border of the head orange-rufous with concolorous pilosity; vertex with short orange-rufous hairs. Clypeus convex brown with few orange-rufous hairs. Gena brown with long and abundant orange-rufous hairs continuous with those of the occiput. Scape and pedicel brown with concolorous hairs; first flagellomere dark brown; apical flagellomeres dark brown (Fig. 52). Maxillary palpus orange-rufous with long abundant orangerufous pilosity, distal segment spatulate (Fig. 52). Proboscis and labellum dark brown.
Thorax: scutum reddish-brown with short abundant orange-rufous pilosity, without longitudinal stripes (Fig. 53). Scutellum reddish-brown with long orange-rufous hairs on distal margin (Fig. 53). Pleura with long abundant orange-rufous hairs; anepisternum with tufts of long whitish hairs (Fig. 54). Legs reddish-brown. Coxa with long abundant orange-rufous hairs. Wing slightly infuscated orange along costal margin (Fig. 55).
Abdomen: reddish-brown dorsally with orange-rufous hairs on all tergites, without spots (Fig. 56). Sternites concolorous with tergites and with abundant orange-rufous hairs, without spots.
