FE2BDF5D4946D453C6DC59EC72BFFB65.taxon	description	Description: –– Frustules rectangular in girdle view (Figs 1, 2), solitary or in pairs. Valves heteropolar, lanceolate with convex margins throughout its entire cell division cycle (Figs 3 – 33). Head pole protracted, truncated-rostrate, usually clearly depressed, lacking an apical pore field (Figs 100 – 106). Foot pole in longer specimens distinctly elongated, narrowly rostrate, in shorter valves only shortly elongated. Distinct apical pore field present on foot pole, composed of at least 4 long rows of very small porelli (Figs 102, 107). Valve dimensions (n = 40): length 8 – 17 μm, width 4 – 5 μm. Sternum narrow but distinct, zig-zag shape, as raised as the virgae (Figs 101 – 105). Striae almost parallel to very weakly radiate in smaller specimens, 10 – 12 in 10 µm, stretched ovate in shape, from mantle to sternum. Broadest part on the mantle, becoming gradually more acute towards the sternum. Striae composed of with 2 – 4, occasionally 5 rows of small, rounded areolae (Figs 101 – 105). Viminules present in entire stria (Figs 101 – 105). Abvalvar part of the mantle with a broad hyaline edge (Figs 101, 106). Small, elongated mantle plaques present at the mantle edge (Fig. 106). Spines flattened, concave on its back, usually originating from virgae at the valve face / mantle junction (Figs 101, 102, 104, 105), with elliptical base of about the same width of the vimines they sit on. Spine body solid, usually with a flared, skirt-like projection, sometimes surrounding the entire base of the spine (Figs 101, 106, white arrows). Occasionally, spines emerging from the vimines (Fig. 103) or even from both virgae and vimines (Fig. 107).	en	Vijver, Bart Van De, Wetzel, Carlos E. FE2BDF5D4946D453C6DC59EC72BFFB65.taxon	etymology	Etymology: — The species is named in honour of our well appreciated friend and colleague, Dr. David M. Williams (Natural History Museum, London, UK), in recognition of his incredible contributions to diatom taxonomy in general, and araphid taxonomy in more detail. Without his insights and efforts, the taxonomy of araphid diatoms would have been much more confusing.	en	Vijver, Bart Van De, Wetzel, Carlos E. FE2BDF5D4947D455C6DC5E6C7255FF7F.taxon	description	Description: –– Frustules in girdle view rectangular to almost clavate. Valves clearly heteropolar, usually with an inflated, almost elliptical central apart (e. g. Figs 86, 87, 91) and protracted head and foot poles. Head poles usually broader than foot poles. Valve dimensions (n = 15): length 10 – 16 µm, width 4.5 – 6 µm. Sternum narrow, linear to linearlanceolate, zig zag in shape. Striae almost parallel to weakly radiate throughout, ca 12 in 10 µm.	en	Vijver, Bart Van De, Wetzel, Carlos E. FE2BDF5D4947D455C6DC5E6C7255FF7F.taxon	biology_ecology	Ecology and associated diatom flora of the Delogne sample: –– Punctastriata davidwilliamsii was abundantly present in the investigated sample from Frahan. The entire sample was dominated by several small-celled araphid species such as Staurosira construens Ehrenberg (1843: 424), S. pinnata Ehrenberg (1843: 424), S. cf. venter (Ehrenberg 1854, plate XIV [14], fig. 50) Grunow (1882: 139), Pseudostaurosira brevistriata (Grunow in Van Heurck 1881: plate 45, figs 31 – 34) D. M. Williams & Round (1988: 276), together with Cocconeis lineata Ehrenberg (1849: 301), Navicula capitatoradiata H. Germain (ex Gasse 1986: 86), Reimeria sinuata (W. Gregory 1856: 4) Kociolek & Stoermer (1987: 457), Grunowia tabellaria (Grunow 1862: 548) Rabenhorst (1864: 146), Epithemia adnata (Kützing 1833: 544) Brébisson (1838: 16), and Nitzschia fonticola (Grunow in Cleve & Möller 1880: 97) Grunow (in Van Heurck 1881: plate 69, figs 15 – 20). According to Lange-Bertalot et al. (2017) this species composition may reflect higher electrolyte contents and moderate nutrient levels. The presence of Epithemia and Cocconeis most likely points to the presence of aquatic plants.	en	Vijver, Bart Van De, Wetzel, Carlos E.
