Y. Luo, K. Habib & Q. R. Li 2025

Spirodecospora brevifissurata X.Y. Luo, K. Habib & Q.R. Li sp. nov. Fig. 2

MycoBank number: MB859329

Etymology —The specific epithet brevifissurata refers to the morphological feature of the type specimen. The prefix “brevi-” is derived from the Latin brevis, meaning “short,” and emphasizes that the longitudinal germ slit of the ascospore is significantly shorter than that of other species in the genus. The element “fissur-” comes from the Latin fissura, meaning “crack” or “cleft,” describing the form of the germ slit. The suffix “-ata” is a feminine Latin adjectival ending that agrees grammatically with the feminine genus Spirodecospora, indicating “possessing a short germ slit.”

Description: Saprobic on dead bamboo culms. Sexual morph: Ascomata 780–830 × 890–1100 µm (x̅ = 798 × 1073 µm, n = 10), solitary, scattered, deeply immersed within the host cortex, visible as black dot on host surface, in cross-section globose to subglobose, with a central, periphysate ostiolar canal, clypeus minute. Ostiole slightly raised or flush with the surface of the host, cylindrical neck, centric. Peridium 31–65 µm (x̅ = 48.8µm, n = 20), composed of hyaline inner layer and dark brown to dark outer layer. Paraphyses 1.9–4.3 µm (x̅ = 2.9 µm, n = 20) wide, long, hyaline, unbranched, filamentous, numerous. Asci 250–285 × 11.5–17 µm (x̅ = 270.5 × 14.6 µm, n = 30), 8-spored, unitunicate, straight or slightly curved, cylindrical, short-pedicellate, with a square shaped, J+, apical apparatus, bluing in Melzer’s reagent, 3.7–6.1 µm high × 4.3–6.4 µm wide (x̅ = 4.8 × 5.6 µm, n = 30). Ascospores 24–32 × 9–12.7 µm (x̅ = 29 × 11.5 µm, n = 30), uniseriate, or partly overlapping uniseriate, unicellular, inequilaterally ellipsoidal to fusiform, tapered towards both ends, dark brown, smooth-walled, with a short single longitudinal germ slit in the middle; containing numerous guttules of varying sizes, surrounded by a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: Undetermined.

Culture characteristics: Ascospores germinated on PDA within 48h. Colonies reached 20 mm diam. within one month at 28℃, effuse, oval, protuberant, cottony. White from above; white to pale grey in the center, dark brown around from below.

Material examined: CHINA, Yunnan Province, Zhaotong City, Yongshan County, Wumengshan National Nature Reserve (28°19′31.44″N, 107°33′51.75″E), elevation: 1308 m, on dead bamboo culms, 16 October 2024, Xing-Yu Luo, WMS150-B (Holotype, GMB6410; Isotype KUN-HKAS 150446; ex-type GMBC6410) .

Additional material examined: CHINA, Yunnan Province, Zhaotong City, Yongshan County, Wumengshan National Nature Reserve (28°19′29.28″N, 107°33′49.63″E), elevation: 1211 m, on dead bamboo culms, 16 October 2024, Xing-Yu Luo, WMS370 (GMB6411; GMBC6411) .

Note: In the phylogram (Fig. 1), Spirodecospora brevifissurata and S. jichuanenii formed a well-supported sister clade with strong statistical support (100%BS/1.00 PP). Morphologically, the two species closely resemble each other in having a square-shaped ascal apical apparatus and ascospores with a short, single longitudinal germ slit in the middle. However, they can be distinguished by differences in the dimensions of the ascomata, apical apparatus, and ascospores. Spirodecospora brevifissurata has larger ascomata (780–830 × 890–1100 µm), a slightly larger apical apparatus (3.7–6.1 µm high × 4.3–6.4 µm wide), and longer, broader ascospores (24–32 × 9–12.7 µm), whereas S. jichuanenii possesses smaller ascomata (620–815 × 504–592 µm) and smaller ascospores (19.2–24.5 × 6.1–7.7 µm). Additionally, S. jichuanenii lacks a mucilaginous sheath surrounding the ascospores, whereas the new species has a distinctly thicker sheath (Liu et al. 2025). Comparative analysis of nucleotide base pairs showed that Spirodecospora brevifissurata differs from S. jichuanenii (GMB 5628) by 7.3% (41/562) in the ITS locus, 1% (8/806) in the LSU locus, and 3% (32/1067) in the rpb2 gene.

Spirodecospora brevifissurata is readily distinguished from all other species in the genus by its square-shaped ascal apical apparatus and ascospores with tapered ends having a single longitudinal striation in the middle half of their length. In contrast, other species in the genus possess wedge-shaped apical apparatus and ascospores ornamented with two to five rows of spiral ornamentations (Lu et al. 1998; Sugita et al. 2022; Liu et al. 2025).

Based on these morphological and molecular differences, supported by phylogenetic analysis, we introduce S. brevifissurata as a new species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/EA6C879AFF85FFCC16F0F974E1DAFCF1	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
