L. Wang 2025

Cladosporium tongheensis X.L. Wang, sp. nov. FIGURE 2

Index Fungorum number: IF904626

Etymology: tongheensis, referring to the locality from where the fungus was isolated.

Sexual morph: Not observed.

Asexual morph: hyphomycetous.

Mycelial structures comprised superficial or submerged hyphae, segmented, branched, varied from almost colorless to pale brown or clearly brownish. Hyphae possessed smooth or faintly textured surfaces, were thin-walled, and ranged in width from 2–3.5 µm wide. Conidiophores 18.8–102.9 µm length, 2.6–4.9 µm width (x̄ = 54.2 × 4.6 µm; n = 30), arose singly either laterally or terminally from the hyphal strands, stood erect, occasionally curved or slightly flexible, coloration ranged from pale brown to darker brown, with occasional branching, visible septa featuring clear constrictions and occasional swellings, and smooth to faintly roughened surfaces. Conidia occurred abundantly, ellipsoid and limoniform to obovoid, 4.4–7.7 µm long, 2.7–4.3 µm wide (x̄ = 5.8 × 3.5 µm; n = 30), predominantly lacked septa, though sometimes a single septum was observed. smooth walled pale brown to distinctly brownish. Secondary ramoconidia appeared as cylindrical, subcylindrical, or oblong forms, pale to medium brown in coloration, 10.7–32.7 µm long, 2.9–4.2 µm wide (x̄ = 16.9 × 3.6 µm; n = 30), typically tapered toward the basal region, with 0–4 septa, each with evident constrictions at the septum.

Culture characteristics: Colonies grown on PDA attained diameters of 68–71 mm after 2 weeks at 25°C, abundant dense aerial mycelium, grayish, fluffy, with a flat growth profile, reverse dark brown to black. On MEA medium, colonies reached diameters of 66–74 mm after two weeks, producing abundant fluffy gray aerial mycelium, with reverse coloration dull brown and possessing a narrow brown marginal zone. On SNA medium, colony diameters were 58–64 mm after 2 weeks, exhibiting sparse gray mycelial growth with a flat, velvety texture, and gray reverse. Sporulation was absent on all tested growth media.

Material examined: CHINA, Heilongjiang Province, Tonghe County, 48°31’27” N, 127°35’79” E, alt. 322 m, on the lesions of Allium ochotense, May 2023, X.L. Wang. (holotype HAAS-23001, dried metabolically inactive culture, ex-type culture CGMCC 3.28320). GenBank: ITS = PQ130166; act = PQ118986; tef 1= PQ118988 .

Notes: Phylogenetic analyses formed the strains of C. tongheensis (CGMCC 3.28320, HC-4) as an independent clade, closely related and sister to C. basiinflatum (CBS 822.84), with strong statistical support (88% ML /0.98 PP; Figure 1). Sequence alignment between C. tongheensis and C. basiinflatum exhibited nucleotide differences of 460/465 bp (with 2 gaps) in the ITS region, 162/195 bp (with 4 gaps) in the act gene, and 160/198 bp (with 15 gaps) in the tef1 gene. However, C. tongheensis differs from C. basiinflatum in several key morphological characteristics. The hyphae of C. tongheensis (2–3.5 µm wide) are notably narrower than those of C. basiinflatum (4–7 µm wide) (Bensch et al. 2010). The conidiophores of C. tongheensis (18.8–102.9 µm) are typically shorter compared to C. basiinflatum (35–140 µm). Furthermore, an important diagnostic trait distinguishing the two species is sporulation capacity. While abundant sporulation was reported for C. basiinflatum, no sporulation occurred in C. tongheensis across all tested culture media (Bensch et al. 2010). Thus, based on morphological characteristics and multi-gene phylogenetic analyses, C. tongheensis is introduced and described as a novel taxon found on Heilongjiang Province, China.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/E0558788C34EFF8F7B8E99844C870724	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
