This specimen is a male adult missing right hindtarsus, and with a foreign bot fly leg appearing to be stuck with left midfemur and unattached to the thorax. The Cuterebra praegrandis Austen holotype [BMNH(E)249608] is a female specimen deposited at the Natural History Museum (London), while the female paratype [USNMENT 01492826] is housed at the Smithsonian Institution (Washington D.C.). The present specimen was illustrated by Guimarães (1984) and used for describing the male of this species, however the specimen has no data on locality and collector, and do not belong to the type series. Although the holotype label is incorrectly pinned to this specimen, it may have been used to indicate that this specimen was compared with those of the type series or that it was collected in the type locality. Although the data code number does not match with the code from the original description, Del Ponte (1939) used the term “tipo” for holotype, and we have no reason to doubt that this specimen is the original holotype. The missing terminalia (including abdominal segment 5) appear to suggest it has been dissected. However, there are no genitalia vials nor glued parts on any card pinned together with the specimen. Even the top blank label card does not have any remnants of adhesive under ultraviolet light. More so, Del Ponte (1939) did not include any description nor any figures of the terminalia.
