Celonites kozlovi is a polylectic species in the narrow sense (sensu Müller & Kuhlmann 2008), collecting pollen from flowers of plants belonging to at least five families (with the predomination of Asteraceae and Lamiaceae) and using diverse methods for both pollen and nectar uptake. Females consume pollen directly from the anthers with the mouthparts and the foretarsi. In addition, this species can be a secondary nectar robber (sensu Inouye 1980) that was never observed in other species of Masarinae . Morphological and behavioral adaptations of C. kozlovi for pollen uptake from flowers were described in detail by Fateryga (2020) and Fateryga et al. (2023). Flower-visiting records (all in the Altai Republic of Russia): Aster alpinus L., Crepidiastrum tenuifolium (Willd.) Sennikov (≡ Youngia tenuifolia subsp. altaica Babc. & Stebbins), Klasea marginata (Tausch) Kitag., Pseudopodospermum pubescens (DC.) Zaika, Sukhor. & N. Kilian, Saussurea pricei N.D. Simpson, and Taraxacum sp. (all Asteraceae); Sisymbrium polymorphum (Murray) Roth ( Brassicaceae); Gypsophila patrinii Ser. ( Caryophyllaceae); Convolvulus ammannii Desr. The species is closely related to Celonites tristiculus Kostylev, 1935 and can be distinguished from it by a regularly and sparsely punctate frons, with dull and distinctly reticulately microsculptured interspaces exceeding the puncture diameter in both sexes (Figs 1D, 2C) (versus a densely rugosely punctate frons, with rather shining, less distinctly microsculptured interspaces less than the puncture diameter in C. tristiculus, Fig. 7F, G), sternum VI of the female with moderately coarse macropunctures and reticulately micropunctured interspaces between them (Fig. 1F) (versus with much coarser macropunctures and smoothened interspaces between them in C. tristiculus, Fig. 9J), apical margin of the male sternum VIII without distinct short acute processes (Fig. 5L) (versus with two distinct short acute processes in C. tristiculus, Fig. 5M); harpide with a distinctly produced postero-lateral lobe, and volsella with a straight posterior margin (Fig. 6L) (versus harpide with the postero-lateral lobe not so produced and volsella with a roundly produced posterior margin in C. tristiculus, Fig. 6M).

Description. Female. Body length (from head to apical margin of tergum II) 5 mm (total body length about 6.5 mm); forewing length 5 mm. Head in frontal view about 1.2× as wide as long (from top of median ocellus to apical margin of clypeus). Clypeus about 1.3× as wide as long; its apical emargination shallow, about 0.2× as deep as wide, taking about 0.35 of clypeal width, apical teeth rounded. Distance between lateral ocellus and occiput about 0.8× as long as distance between lateral ocelli and about as distance between lateral ocellus and compound eye. Antenna with articles 8–12 forming ventrally flattened club about 2.4× as long as wide in dorsal view. Width of gena in front of ocular sinus about equal to diameter of lateral ocellus. Preoccipital carina weak but distinct along nearly whole outer margin of compound eye except uppermost dorsal surface. Pronotum with anterior side nearly vertical and slightly concave, roundly angled to dorsal surface. Pronotal humerus broadly rounded in dorsal view; in lateral view, pronotal carina distinctly separating antero-ventral area of pronotum from its dorsal area at antero-lateral sides. Scutellum separated from mesoscutum by transverse suture, moderately convex, bluntly angled posteriorly. Axilla of scutellum with obsolete lateral projection towards tegula. Tegula without depression in front of axilla; outer side of tegula distinctly shallowly emarginate. Epipleural and episternal sulci indistinct. Ventral mesepisternum unevenly rounded ventrally. Epicnemial carina distinct. Mesepimeron produced posteriorly as small tubercle. Dorsal carinae of propodeum forming sharp lamellar tooth on medial end, adjacent to metanotum. Outline of emargination between lateral lamella and postero-lateral process of propodeum small, comma-like, its medially directed apex hardly enlarged. Terga I–V medially with straight, not crenulate margins, laterally with small tooth. Tergum VI bluntly angulate apically, laterally with rounded tooth. Sternum VI postero-medially with small acute process. Basitarsus of foreleg about 3.4× as long as broad in dorsal view.

Clypeus regularly punctate with sparse and very shallow punctures; interspaces exceeding puncture diameter, dull, strongly reticulately microsculptured. Punctation on frons generally similar to that on clypeus but macropunctures evidently deeper. Punctation on vertex and gena much denser, interspaces less than puncture diameter, also evidently reticulately microsculptured. Pronotum, scutum, and scutellum densely punctate, punctures larger than those anywhere on head, interspaces less than puncture diameter, dull, with reticulate microsculpture. Tegula dull, mostly microsculptured in anterior half, with few indistinct punctures, and deeply punctate in posterior half, interspaces between punctures reaching puncture diameter. Dorsal and ventral mesepisterna and mesepimeron generally sculptured similarly to pronotum, scutum, and scutellum but some punctures slightly coarser. Dorsal surface of metanotum densely punctate with punctures smaller than those on pronotum, scutum, and scutellum, interspaces much less than puncture diameter, dull, reticulately microsculptured; posterior surface of metanotum without distinct macropunctures, only with microsculpture. Metapleuron and lateral surface of propodeum dull, longitudinally wrinkled, without distinct punctures. Posterior surface of propodeum (except lateral lamella) densely punctate, punctures forming longitudinal rows, interspaces less than puncture diameter, dull, with reticulate microsculpture; lateral lamella regularly punctate with coarse macropunctures, interspaces less than puncture diameter, with less distinct microsculpture. Metasomal terga deeply punctate, about as coarse as pronotum, scutum, and scutellum, interspaces less than puncture diameter on disc and reaching puncture diameter on depression, dull, with weak microsculpture. Sternum I with dull reticulate microsculpture only. Sterna II–V with scattered fine punctures, interspaces much exceeding puncture diameter, rather dull, with strong reticulate microsculpture. Sternum VI with moderately coarse punctures, interspaces reaching puncture diameter, rather dull, with distinct reticulate microsculpture.

Mandible, labrum, and clypeus covered with thin pale setae, reaching in length diameter of median ocellus. Frons and pronotum with very short setae, reaching at most 1/3 of diameter of median ocellus. Vertex between ocelli with few setae reaching in length 1/2 of diameter of median ocellus. Compound eye with very short dust-like setae. Scutum, scutellum, and terga without noticeable setae. Sterna mostly with short appressed setae, especially at apical margins. Coxae and femora with setae as long as those on clypeus. Tibia and tarsus of foreleg with stiff setae as long as diameter of median ocellus, those setae on mid and hind legs much shorter; pollen-collecting brush of stiff setae on inner surface of basitarsus of foreleg not modified. Spur of foretibia slightly curved and rather blunt apically.

Basal color black. Following parts whitish-yellow: median spot on pronotum, short and narrow band along posterior side of pronotum near tegula, tegula (except antero-central part), lateral side of lateral lamella of propodeum, apical band on tergum I extended anteriorly at lateral sides, apical bands on terga II–III, apical bands on medial parts of terga IV–V. Whitish-yellow color on body slightly outlined by brown. Mandible, labrum, antero-central part of tegula, and tarsi rather brown. Ventral side of antennal club ferruginous. Small basal parts of tibiae pure yellow. Wings strongly fuscous; veins and pterostigma brown.

Male. Body length (from head to apical margin of tergum II) 4.5 mm (total body length about 6 mm); forewing length 4.5 mm. Structure resembles that in female except the following: head in frontal view about 1.3× as wide as long; distance between lateral ocellus and occiput about 1.65× as distance between lateral ocellus and compound eye; antennal club larger than that in female; ventral side of antennal club with three oval-shaped tyloids on articles 9, 10, and 11; tyloid of article 10 taking about 2/3 of length of article; tyloid of article 9 smaller than that of article 10 and larger than that of article 11; tergum VI and sternum VI as those of preceding segment; tergum VII roundly truncate apically, laterally with tooth; sternum VIII apically truncate, without processes. Genitalia as in Fig. 6L; harpide with distinctly produced postero-lateral lobe; volsella with straight posterior margin; aedeagus rather broad, slightly narrowing towards apex.

Sculpture and setation as in female except that clypeus more shining, with less strong reticulate microsculpture on interspaces between macropunctures. Tergum VII punctate coarsely than preceding terga, similarly to lateral lamella of propodeum. Sternum VI sculptured as previous sterna; sternum VII with band of scattered coarse punctures on distal half. Spur of foretibia less curved and dorsally with large transparent lamella. Coloration resembles that in female but tergum VI medially with whitish-yellow apical spot and tibiae rather brown than black.

Material examined. Celonites montanus is broadly oligolectic (sensu Müller & Kuhlmann 2008) on Lamiaceae . Identification of the specimens from Kyrgyzstan is preliminary and requires further confirmation. They differ from specimens from both Tajikistan and Uzbekistan by completely black dorsal mesepisternum and scutellum (like in C. modestus). At the same time, specimens from Kyrgyzstan have completely orange antenna, similarly to those from Uzbekistan, while specimens of both C. octoannulatus and C. modestus from Tajikistan have the antenna always significantly darkened dorsally. Males of C. octoannulatus from Kyrgyzstan, as well as males of C. modestus should be collected and compared with those of C. octoannulatus from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The available male from Kyrgyzstan (from CSZT) is lacking the genitalia. When I received the material, female genitalia were glued to a piece of cartoon and pinned under this male specimen, while the female from the same series was without genitalia. It is obvious that the genitalia had been extracted by somebody from both specimens from CSZT but the male’s ones were lost and the female’s ones were pinned under the male specimen by a mistake.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/D06EF633FFC87437FF231B309F177FCC	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Celonites sibiricus is broadly oligolectic(sensu Müller&Kuhlmann2008),predominantly collecting pollen from flowers of Lamiaceae . Morphological and behavioral adaptations of C. sibiricus for pollen uptake from flowers were described in detail by Fateryga (2020) and Fateryga et al. (2023). Females take up pollen with pollen-collecting setae on the frontal surface of the head, by rubbing it over the nototribic anthers; rubbing movements are alternated with pollen brushing from the head with the foretarsi, from which the pollen is finally consumed with the mouthparts. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan ( Abai, Almaty, Jetisu, and Kyzylorda provinces).

Trophic relationships. Celonites tristiculus is probably polylectic or at most eclectically oligolectic. Females collect pollen (but not nectar) from flowers of Allium caricifolium Kar. & Kir. ( Amaryllidaceae), consuming it directly from the anthers with the mouthparts and the foretarsi. At the same time, they collect nectar mainly from flowers of Ziziphora tenuior ( Lamiaceae), which are hardly used for pollen uptake. Flower-visiting records (all in Kazakhstan): Allium caricifolium ( Amaryllidaceae); Nepeta micrantha Bunge and Ziziphora tenuior (both Lamiaceae) (Fateryga 2025a); Orobanche amoena C.A. Mey. ( Orobanchaceae) (new record). The record of this species at O. amoena is apparently the first documented report of a pollen wasp visiting flowers of holoparasitic plants in the family Orobanchaceae . However, it was not documented whether C. tristiculus collected pollen or nectar (or both) at this plant. Although a few flowering individuals of O. amoena were present at the locality where the foraging behavior of C. tristiculus was studied (Fateryga 2025a), I did not observe this wasp species visiting them.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/D06EF633FFD5742AFF231A349ADF7CC8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
