According to Saussure(1869), Saussure& Zehntner(1893 –1899), Terra(1995),and de Luna& Hernández-Baltazar (2020): large to very large stick-like mantises (Figs. 1–9). Male (♂) brachypterous ( P. sumichrasti) with tegmina and wings covering around 4/5 of the abdominal length (Figs. 2–4, 8), or macropterous ( P. championi) (Figs. 7, 9), both capable of flight. Tegmina with costal area green and opaque, with a light-colored stripe below (Figs. 2–4, 7–9), the rest subhyaline ( P. championi) (Figs. 7, 9) or with a dark anal area ( P. sumichrasti) (Figs. 2–4, 8). Hindwings with costal area greenish and a large dark spot in the anal area ( P. sumichrasti) (Figs. 2–4, 8), or with costal area brown with the rest being light brown and subhyaline ( P. championi) (Fig. 9). Female (♀) brachypterous, with tegmina and wings not covering ( P. sumichrasti) (Figs. 1, 4, 8) or barely covering ( P. championi) (Figs. 5–6, 9) about 1/3 of the abdominal length; both incapable of flight. Tegmina opaque and either green or light brown (depending on the overall color of the specimen), sometimes with stripe-like patterns and dark anal area (Figs. 1, 4–6, 8–9). Hindwings bicolored ( P. sumichrasti): costal area and inner margin of the anal area green or light brown and subhyaline, posterior and external margins dark (Figs. 1, 4, 9); or dark and concolorous ( P. championi) (Figs. 5–6, 9).

Phasmomantis is most similar to “ Stagmomantis ”, but the somewhat flattened cercus of Phasmomantis is a distinguishing feature; other features worth mentioning are the length of the tegmina and wings of the male P. sumichrasti as well as the female sexes of both species, similar only to the females of those species in the subgenus Oromantis Giglio-Tos, 1917 .

Type species. Phasmomantis sumichrasti (Saussure, 1861) .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C9101D6EFFEDC06421ED5D5A6D4EFE97	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Saussure (1871) recorded P. sumichrasti for the Mexican state of Veracruz, specifically in the surroundings of Cordoba and Orizaba; later (Saussure 1872) he would mention it for the “Cordillère orientale” (likely referring to the Sierra Madre Oriental). Saussure & Zehntner (1893 –1899) recorded it for the Mexican states of Jalisco, Veracruz and Yucatan, as well as for the country of Belize (as British Honduras). Chopard (1916) recorded it for Guatemala, Honduras (likely Belize) and the Mexican state of Veracruz. Hebard (1932) recorded it for Yucatan and Veracruz, Mexico. Terra (1995) examined a specimen from the Mexican state of Veracruz and mentioned it for Guatemala, Honduras (likely Belize) and Nicaragua, the latter country was mentioned without having analyzed specimens. Schwarz & Roy (2019) mentioned it for the Mexican state of Yucatan and illustrated the male genitalia using a specimen from this state. Garikipati & Bond (2021) recorded it for Belize. De Luna (2022) mentioned it for the Mexican state of Tamaulipas in a non-peer-reviewed grant report. Most recently, Cano-Santana (2023) recorded it for the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

Known distribution. Belize, Guatemala, Honduras (hereby confirmed), Mexico (Jalisco, Oaxaca, Veracruz and Yucatan; as well as Campeche, Chiapas, Nayarit, Puebla, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco and Tamaulipas, which represent new state records) and Nicaragua (hereby confirmed) (Fig. 10).

Remarks. Saussure (1861) described the male counterpart of this species under a different name ( Mantis mexicana) in the same publication; this was noted synonymized quite rapidly (Saussure & Zehntner 1893 –1899). The record from Texas (USA) mentioned by Saussure & Zehntner (1893 –1899), Kirby (1904), Chopard (1916) and Terra (1995) is considered erroneous, as there are no specimens in collections with such data and no further records from this country have been found. Beier (1935) synonymized P. basalis under this species and was agreed by Terra (1995) and Ehrmann (2002); it is important to note that the data on the label is incorrect, as this genus is not found in India. Agudelo (2004) mentioned P. sumichrasti for Colombia; however, the male specimen examined showed discrepancies with regard to the color and length of the tegmina and hindwings, being macropterous instead of brachypterous (Salazar & Ríos-Maláver, 2012). Therefore, this record is relegated to P. championi .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C9101D6EFFE8C06821ED5BB96AC5FA47	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
