According to Young (1977) the crown, pronotum, scutellum and face have a yellowish green coloration, and the forewings and disc of the pronotum are darker green. However, this is not the only combination of colors observed in the genus. From the observation of the color patterns of the body of 497 specimens (females n=251, males n=246) of B. impressifrons, and 200 specimens (females n=100, males n=100) of B. wilsoni sp. nov. it was found that, in Colombia, these specimens exhibit several different color patterns (Fig. 1).

Distribution: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

Checklist of species of the genus Borogonalia

B. crinata Young, 1977 [Peru]

B. cruciatula (Breddin, 1902) [Ecuador]

B. impressifrons (Signoret, 1854) [Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela]

B. wilsoni Dietrich & Silva-Castaño sp. nov. Average interocular distance 0.926 mm (±0.021) (n=12). Frontoclypeus yellow with black muscle impressions.Anteclypeus, lorum and gena black in males and pale yellow in females. Crown with four black spots in males and spots lighter in females. Pronotum with a pair of divergent longitudinal black stripes. Forewings in males extended to anal tergite, but usually shorter in females exposing apex of abdomen, few female specimens with longer wings. Other characters as in generic description.

Male genitalia: Pygofer, in lateral view, strongly produced, evenly rounded apically with macrosetae scattered over distal half (Fig. 2D). Subgenital plates, in ventral view, with lateral margin convex near base, concave distally, apex attenuate, numerous elongate microsetae along lateral margin from the base to apical part. Connective Yshaped. Style similar to that of B. impressifrons, short and slender, extending posteriorly beyond apex of connective in dorsal view, with apophysis curved laterad, truncate apically (Fig. 2C). Paraphysis asymmetrical, slender and elongate in basal half, distal half somewhat broadened, in ventral view, branches relatively short, sharp forceps-like (Fig. 2B) compared to B. impressifrons . Aedeagus in lateral view with shaft broader than the dorsal lobes, shaft apex divided into two rounded lobes, ventral lobe larger than dorsal lobe (Fig. 2A).

Female terminalia: Sternite VII distinctly wider than long, posterior margin trilobed, with lateral lobes narrow and medial lobe broad (Fig. 2E). Pygofer, in lateral view, moderately produced with macrosetae scattered over apical part and along ventromesal margin (Fig. 2F). First valvula with dorsal sculpture strigate ventroapical sculpture scale-like (Fig. 2G). Second valvula with row of ~ 13 somewhat quadrate dorsal teeth each with fine denticles (Fig. 2H). Third valvula (=gonoplac) in lateral view, basal part narrow than the anterior part, ventral and apical part covered with numerous microtrichia (Fig. 2I).

Male coloration: First coloration pattern (n=46), sternites and tergites dark brown, except in some specimens whose body is light brown; hind tibiae light with some slightly dark areas; crown in dorsal view yellow; pronotum yellow towards anterior margin with rest dark green; black patterns of crown, pronotum and scutellum conspicuous; forewings with green, blue or light brown uniform color pattern (Fig. 1F). It should be noted that the green color of preserved specimens tends to change over time turning into a greyish blue color. Second coloration pattern (n=45), sternites and tergites dark brown; hind tibiae dark, although light in some specimens; crown in dorsal view yellow; pronotum yellow towards anterior margin rest dark green; black patterns of crown, pronotum and scutellum conspicuous; forewings green with black pattern (Fig. 1G). The green color of preserved specimens tends to change over time turning into a greyish blue color. Third coloration pattern (n=9): Sternites and tergites dark brown; hind tibiae dark; crown and pronotum greyish yellow; dark brown patterns of crown, pronotum and scutellum conspicuous; forewings grey with dark brown pattern (Fig. 1H).

Female coloration: First coloration pattern (n=54), sternites light brown and tergites dark brown; hind tibiae dark; crown in dorsal view yellow; dark brown patterns of crown, pronotum and scutellum conspicuous; pronotum greyish yellow towards anterior margin rest pinkish-red or greyish-white; forewings white with dark brown pattern (Fig. 1I), although some specimens with reddish-pink color instead of dark brown, but this color changes with time and type of preservation of specimens. Second coloration pattern (n=46), sternites light brown and tergites dark brown; hind tibiae pale; crown in dorsal view yellow; dark brown patterns of crown, pronotum and scutellum not very conspicuous; pronotum greyish-yellow towards anterior margin with rest blue to greyish-white coloration, although some specimens have a completely yellow pronotum; forewings uniform blue-white (Fig. 1J), although some specimens with wings hyaline.

Distribution: Bogotá (Universidad Nacional de Colombia) and Guasca (Páramo Grande), Colombia.

Host plants: Kikuyu grass ( Cenchrus clandestinus (Hochst. ex Chiov.) Morrone) [ Poaceae]) (Silva-Castaño et al. 2019b); Sparrmannia africana L.f. [ Malvaceae]; it may be only an occasional visitor to this plant due to the low number of specimens captured (n=2).

Etymology: The species is named in honor of Dr. Mike R. Wilson of the National Museum Wales, UK, expert on Cicadellidae .

Type material: Holotype male— Colombia: Cundinamarca, Bogotá, Universidad Nacional de Colombia Sede Bogotá, 4° 38’ 25.2’’ N- 74° 04’ 53.4’’ W, 2555 m, 17 September 2016, entomological net, coll. Andres Felipe Silva-Castaño (catalogue number UMNG-Ins 23552) . Paratypes 4 males, 3 females — same data as holotype, except for the date of collection: 2 males 14 January 2017 (UMNG-Ins 23553 and UMNG-Ins 23554), 1 male 17 December 2016 (UMNG-Ins 23555), 1 male 20 February 2016 (UMNG-Ins 23556), 1 female 18 July 2016 (UMNG-Ins 23557), 1 female 13 February 2016 (UMNG-Ins 23558), 1 female 22 November 2016 (UMNG-Ins 23559) .

Remarks: The new species superficially resembles some species of Oragua Melichar, 1926 and Sonesimia Young, 1977 in having a relatively produced head and relatively short wings in the female. The new species, however, clearly belongs in Borogonalia based on the chaetotaxy of the male subgenital plate, the structure of the paraphysis and the lobed apex of the aedeagus. Externally, this species is clearly distinguished from other Borogonalia species by the relatively pointed head and indistinct transverse concavity anterad of the ocelli. The paraphysis is similar to that of B. crinata, although the base of the paraphysis of B. wilsoni sp. nov. is straighter. The shape of the female sternite VII also distinguishes the new species from other species of Borogonalia .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/C70F87DB7B04C729028CB893FB9EB505	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
