Ma, DLS 061 (FCATAS 12659, Paratype) .

Remarks.

Biscogniauxia diaoluoshanensis is characterized by slightly concave stromata with a blackish-brown surface and shiny black papillate ostioles, and nearly equilateral brown ascospores with a conspicuous straight, almost spore-length germ slit. Biscogniauxia granmoi Lar. N. Vassiljeva resembles the new species in its stromatal morphology and ascospore shape but possesses larger perithecia (0.6–0.8 mm high × 0.3–0.5 mm broad) and larger asci (119–142 µm total length), and occurs on trunks and branches of Prunus (Vasilyeva 1998; Læssøe et al. 1999). Another similar species, B. nummularia (Bull.: Fr.) Kuntze, resembles the new species in stromatal appearance, but can be distinguished by its larger obovoid perithecia (0.3–0.5 × 0.5–0.7 mm), longer asci (95–120 µm total length), and wider ascospores (7.5–8.5 µm) (Ju et al. 1998; Ju and Rogers 2001). In addition, it occurs on wood of Fagus (Ju et al. 1998; Zíbarová and Kout 2017). Phylogenetically, the new species falls within Biscogniauxia clade 4 yet exhibits no obvious affinity to other taxa in this clade. Clade 4 comprises the type species B. nummularia, ten additional Biscogniauxia species, and our new collection. Biscogniauxia nummularia (MUCL 51395, Holotype) differs from B. diaoluoshanensis by 168 base pairs in TUB 2 alignment, representing 11.52 % of the total aligned TUB 2 region. Strain CBS 969.70 of B. nummularia shows 95 - base-pair divergence in RPB 2 and 164 - base-pair divergence in TUB 2 compared with the new species, corresponding to 9.27 % and 11.28 % of aligned nucleotide positions of RPB 2 and TUB 2 regions, respectively. Biscogniauxia capnodes (YMJ 138) differs from B. diaoluoshanensis by 83 base pairs in RPB 2, accounting for 7.57 % of the aligned RPB 2 region. For other congeneric species, sequence similarity to the new species is below 91 % for both RPB 2 and TUB 2. All previously known species display ITS sequence similarity below 86 % relative to this novel taxon.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/0C65A224C1F550138AAC835D471D14A1	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. GenBank accession numbers: ITS (PX 251984); TUB 2 (PX 092171); RPB 2 (PX 092169) .

Remarks.

Phylogenetically, Biscogniauxia jianfengensis forms a sister lineage to the tropical variety B. philippinensis var. microspore, with this clade itself sister to B. latirima Y. M. Ju & J. D. Rogers. Biscogniauxia philippinensis var. microspore resembles the new species in stromatal morphology and ascospore shape but differs in having a larger perithecia (1.4–2.4 × 0.2–0.3 mm vs. 450–570 × 210–480 µm) and longer asci with the spore-bearing parts (asci 190–220 µm total length vs. 125–186 µm total length) (Ju et al. 1998). In contrast, B. latirima shares applanate stromata and similar perithecia shape but diverges in smaller apical apparatus (4–5 × 5–6 µm vs. 2.6–5.7 × 6.6–9.2 µm), and larger ascospores (18–21.5 × 10–12 µm vs. 14.8–18.8 × 8.5–10.6 μm) lacking a visible cellular appendage (Ju and Rogers 2001). Morphologically, the new species B. jianfengensis is similar to the tropical taxon B. philippinensis in stromatal morphology, but the latter has larger ascospores (22–27 × 11.5–13 µm) with a straight, faint spore-length germ slit (Ju et al. 1998). Unfortunately, no molecular sequences are available for B. philippinensis, so nucleotide difference comparison could not be implemented.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6C64DE9FA69F5118BE2BB7C1AD4E7340	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
