Sarcops calvus melanonotus Ogilvie-Grant, 1906 —coleto.

Type locality. Malalag, Mindanao, Philippines .

Diagnosis. The male genitalia of Schizosairhynchus sarcoplestes are similar to those of S. philippensis sharing the medianly continuous, proximally recurved dorsal thickenings of the mesosome, the lateral rugose nodi, the central rod-like thickening of the basal apodeme, and the somewhat flared proximal mesosome (Figs 13–14, 16– 17). These two species and S. minovenator are the only known species of Schizosairhynchus in which the female genitalia have more than 20 vss on each side (Figs 25–26, 46).

Schizosairhynchus sarcoplestes can be separated from S, philippensis by the following characters: preantennal head and dorsal anterior plate proportionally longer in S. sarcoplestes (Fig. 6) than in S. philippensis (Fig. 5); distal mesosome of S. sarcoplestes more angular laterally (Fig. 16) than in S. philippensis (Fig. 13); dorsal and ventral thickenings of mesosome, rugose nodi, gonopore, and ventral sclerite all differing in shape between S. sarcoplestes (Figs 16–17) and S. philippensis (Figs 13–14); parameres with longer constrictions in S. sarcoplestes (Fig. 18) than in S. philippensis (Fis. 15); vulval margin with 8–10 vms on each side in S. sarcoplestes (Fig. 26), but 5–7 vms on each side in S. philippensis (Fig. 25). The following chaetotaxy differences require confirmation from fresh material: tergopleurite IV without aps in male S. sarcoplestes (Fig. 3), but with aps in S. philippensis (Fig. 1); at least some of sternites III–VI with 3 sts on each side in S. sarcoplestes (Figs 3–4), but all sternites with 2 sts on each side in S. philippensis (Figs 1–2).

Descriptions

Both sexes. Preantennal area relatively long and broad (Fig. 6), with lateral margins deeply concave, not forming distinct angles at coni. Dorsal anterior plate elongated posteriorly, with long overlap with main roof of head. Head chaetotaxy as in Fig. 6. Thoracic and abdominal segments as in Figs 3–4.

Male. Thoracic and abdominal chaetotaxy as in Fig. 3. Abdominal chaetotaxy: tergopleurites II–III with 4 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) on each side; tergopleurite IV with 4–5 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps), psps on each side; tergopleurites V–VI with 5–6tergocentral macrosetae(ss+tps), psps, and aps on each side; tergopleurite VII with 4–5 tergocentral macrosetae (tps), 2–3 shorter (ss+tps?) median setae, psps, and aps on each side; tergopleurites VIII with 3–4 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) and 2 shorter (ss?) median setae on each side; sternite II with 2 sts on each side, sternites III–IV with 3 sts on each side, and sternites V–VI with 2–3 sts on each side. Basal apodeme broad, with central rod-like structure proximally (Figs 16–17). Proximal mesosome widening proximally; distal mesosome with somewhat angular lateral margins. Distal thickenings of dorsal mesosome medianly continuous, with proximal ends recurved medianly. Ventral sclerite not reaching lateral rugose nodi distally, but with secondary plate-like thickening lateral to gonopore on each side; lpmes marginal. Gonopore rounded. Parameres short, with long, slender constrictions (Fig. 18). Measurements as in Table 1.

Female. Thoracic and abdominal segments as in Fig. 4. Abdominal chaetotaxy: tergopleurites II–III with 4–6 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) on each side; tergopleurites IV–VI with 6–8 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) and psps on each side; tergopleurite VII with 5 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) and psps on each side; tergopleurite VIII with 4–5 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) on each side; sternite II with 2 sts on each side, sternite III with 3 sts on each side, sternite IV with 2–3 sts on each side, and sternites V–VI with 2 sts on each side. Subgenital plate narrowing abruptly near distal end, in most examined specimens not clearly reaching vulval margin or forming partial cross-piece (Fig. 26); in some specimens a cross-piece can be seen, however these specimens almost uniformly have the distal abdomen distorted, and it is not clear how the distal subgenital plate would look in fresh material. Vulval margin gently rounded, with 8–10 short, slender vms and 20–24 short, thorn-like vss on each side; each side of subgenital plate with 11–13 short, slender vos on each side, with distal 3–4 vos median to vss. Measurements as in Table 1.

Etymology. The species epithet is derived from the host genus Sarcops Walden, 1875, itself derived from “ sárx ” (“σάρξ”), ancient Greek for “flesh”, and “ ṓps ” (“ὤψ”), ancient Greek for “face”. In addition, “ lēistḗs ” (“λῃστής”) is from ancient Greek for “robber”.

Material examined

Types. Ex Sarcops calvus melanonotus . Holotype ♂, Malalag, Mindanao Island, Philippines, [D.S. Schizosairhynchus guadalcanalensis is most similar to S. minovenator Gustafsson & Bush, 2017, both sharing the general shape and proportions of the head (Figs 33–34), the more lateral rugose nodi of the mesosome but lack of rod-like structure of the basal apodeme (Figs 37, 40), the medianly interrupted dorsal thickening of the mesosome (Figs 36, 29), and the gently tapering shape of the female subgenital plate (Figs 46– 47). These two species can be separated by the following characters: both sexes of S. minovenator with at least some of sternites III–VI having 3 sts on each side (Figs 29–30), but only 2 sts on each side on all sternites in S. guadalcanalensis (Figs 31–32); male tergopleurites VII–VIII with medianmost tergocentral setae (ss+tps?) much shorter than more lateral setae (Fig. 29), but with all setae of roughly equal length in S. guadalcanalensis (Fig. 31); proximal mesosome proportionally narrower in S. guadalcanalensis (Fig. 39) than in S. minovenator (Fig. 36); ventral sclerite of mesosome short and rounded in S. guadalcanalensis (Fig. 40), but long and roughly rectangular in S. guadalcanalensis (Fig. 37); shape and position of secondary plates lateral to gonopore, shape of gonopore, shape of distal thickenings of mesosome, and placement and extent of rugose nodi also differ between species (Figs 37, 40); female subgenital plate with small lateral submarginal bulges in S. guadalcanalensis (Fig. 47), but without such bulges in S. minovenator (Fig. 46); female vulval margin with>20 vss on each side in S. minovenator (Fig. 46), but with <20 vss on each side in S. guadalcanalensis (Fig. 47).

Descriptions

Both sexes. Subgenital plate tapering gently distally, in distal end flaring into short lateral submarginal bulges, not reaching vulval margin. Vulval margin gently rounded to somewhat flattened medianly, with 8–10 short, slender vms and 14–18 short, thorn-like vss on each side; subgenital plate with 7–9 short, slender vos on each side, with the distal 3–4 median to vss. Aplonis panayensis panayensis (Scopoli, 1786) —Asian glossy starling.

Diagnosis. The male of Schizosairhynchus bilobus is most similar to that of S. anahitae, sharing the following characters: aps absent in male (Figs 9, 35); short inner ss of male tergopleurites VII–VIII absent (Figs 9, 35); proximal mesosome with clearly concave proximal margin (Figs 22, 42); ventral sclerite not extended distal to gonopore (Figs 23, 43); rugose nodi on median margin of lateral thickenings of mesosome (Figs 23, 43).

Males of Schizosairhynchus anahitae and those of S. bilobus can be separated by the following characters: head with preantennal area proportionally wider and with lateral margins forming clear angles at coni in S. anahitae (Fig. 45), but with preantennal area more slender, and without angles at coni in S. bilobus (Fig. 12); dorsal anterior plate proportionally wider and with more rounded lateral margins in S. anahitae (Fig. 45) than in S. bilobus (Fig. 12); tergopleurite IV with psps in S. anahitae (Fig. 35), but without psps in S. bilobus (Fig. 9); dorsal mesosome with distinct lobed plates on each side in S. bilobus (Fig. 22), but without such structures in S. anahitae (Fig. 42); distal mesosome folded ventrally to form triangular lobes, and lpmes clearly ventral in S. bilobus (Fig 23), but not folded and lpmes marginal in S. anahitae (Fig. 43).

Descriptions

Both sexes. Preantennal area relatively short and slender (Fig. 12), with lateral margins roughly straight posterior to hyaline margin, and no significant angles formed at coni. Head chaetotaxy as in Fig. 12. Thoracic and abdominal segments as in Figs 9–10.

Male. Thoracic and abdominal chaetotaxy as in Fig. 9. Abdominal chaetotaxy: tergopleurite II with 3 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) on each side; tergopleurites III–IV with 3–4 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) on each side; tergopleurites V–VII with 3–4 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) and psps on each side; tergopleurite VIII with 3 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) on each side; sternites II–VI each with 2 sts on each side. Basal apodeme broad, without central rod-like structure (Figs 22–23). Proximal mesosome of unique shape within genus, with proximal margin concave and lateral margins sinuous; distally, mesosome trapezoidal. Dorsal surface of mesosome with large, roughly triangular, plate-like thickenings, not medianly continuous (Fig. 22). Ventrally, distal end of mesosome seemingly folded proximally, forming large, triangular nodi on each side; lpmes clearly ventral. Ventral sclerite relatively small, not extended distal to gonopore. Rugose nodi situated on median margin of lateral thickenings of mesosome. Gonopore large, broadly ovoid. Parameres slender, with long, slender constriction (Fig. 24). Measurements as in Table 1.

Female. Thoracic and abdominal chaetotaxy as in Fig. 10. Abdominal chaetotaxy: tergopleurite II with 4 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) on each side; tergopleurite III with 4 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) and psps on each side; tergopleurites IV–VII with 5–6 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) and psps on each side; tergopleurite VIII with 5 tergocentral macrosetae (ss+tps) on each side; each of sternites II–VI with 2 sts on each side. Subgenital plate small, narrowing gently in distal end, with bilobed partial cross-piece (Fig. 28). Vulval margin bilobed medianly, with slight differences in chaetotaxy between specimens from different host subspecies: 4–6 short, slender vms and 14–17 short, thorn-like vss on each side in specimens from A. p. strigatus, and 5–7 short, slender vms and 15–18 short, thorn-like vss on each side in specimens from A. p. panayensis (one specimen with only 11 vss on one side). Subgenital plate with 6–8 short, slender vos on each side in specimens from both host subspecies, with 2–3 vos median to vss. Measurements as in Table 1.

Etymology. The species epithet derives from “ bi- ”, Latin for “two”, and “ lobus ”, Latin for “lobe”, referring to both the bilobed distal end of the female subgenital plate, and the two dorsal lobes of the male mesosome.

Material examined

Types.
