B. Chen & Y. L. Gao 2025

Youngia jianningensis Y.B. Chen & Y.L. Gao, sp. nov. (Figures 2, 3, 4)

Type: — CHINA. Fujian Province, Sanming City, Jianning County, 27°0′8.72″N, 117°2′48.71″E, ca. 700 m, 16 May 2023, Y.B. Chen (holotype: FJFC, chen y.b. 20230519001!; isotype: CSH, chen y.b. 20230519002!) .

Diagnosis: — Youngia jianningensis is similar to Y. heterophylla, but differs from the latter in having slender stems 20.0–55.0 cm tall (vs. thick stems 30.0–110.0 cm tall), basal leaves usually orbicular, ovate to elliptic, or hastate (vs. oblanceolate-elliptic), undivided, more rarely lyrately pinnatipartite or pinnatisect as the stem leaves (vs. lyrately pinnatisect) with lateral lobes in 1–4 (vs. in 1–8) pairs. It is also similar to Y. jiulongshanensis, but can be easily distinguished by 11‒14 (vs. 5–7) florets per capitula, 8 (vs. 5) inner phyllaries, corolla 8.0– 8.5 mm (vs. 7.0‒8.0 mm) long.

Description: —Herbs, annual to perennial, usually 20–55 cm tall. Taproot bearing lateral roots. Stems solitary, slender, erect, glabrous or sparsely hairy. Basal leaves mostly undivided, ovate, ovate-elliptic, elliptic, long-elliptic, orbicular, or hastate, 2.0–6.0 cm long, 1.5–3.5 cm wide, apex rounded to acute, margins shallowly undulate-toothed, mucronate, base auriculate; petiole 2.0–7.0 cm long; more rarely lyrately pinnatipartite or pinnatisect, narrowly elliptic, 4.5–10.0 cm long, 2.5–3.5 cm wide, terminal lobe hastate or lanceolate, lateral lobes 1–4 pairs, opposite or alternate, ovate, elliptic, or lanceolate, smaller, margin irregularly toothed, mucronate; petiole 1.5–2.5 cm long. Stem leaves similar to basal leaves, hastate, elliptic, or lanceolate, undivided to lyrately pinnatipartite or pinnatisect, 3.0– 9.5 cm long, 2.5–5.5 cm wide; petiole 0.5–2.0 cm long. Upper stem leaves linear-lanceolate or narrowly hastate, 2.5–7.0 cm long, 0.4–1.2 cm wide; petiole 0.3–0.8 cm long. All the leaves and petioles are glabrous to sparsely pubescent. Synflorescence paniculiform-corymbiform, with many capitula, peduncles wiry. Capitula ca. 14.0 mm in diam after blooming, with 11–14 florets. Involucre cylindric, glabrous, with phyllaries in 3–4 series; outer phyllaries ovate, 0.6–0.9 mm long; inner series of phyllaries lanceolate, 6.0–7.0 mm long; phyllaries apex acute, margin white scarious. Florets yellow, 8.0– 8.5 mm long, ca. 2.0 mm wide, corolla tube ca. 1 mm long, ligule ca. 7.0 mm long, apex 5-lobed. Anther tube ca. 1.5 mm long, blackish yellow, style branches ca. 1 mm, yellow.Achene fusiform, with longitudinal ribs of variable thickness, light brown to purplish brown, apically attenuate. Pappus white, ca. 4 mm.

Chinese vernacular name: —jiàn-níng-huáng-ān-cài (建宁̊fi̎).

Phenology: —Flowering period: April to May, Fruiting period: June to July.

Etymology: —The new species was named after the locality of Jianning County, where it was discovered.

Distribution and habitat: —The species is mainly distributed in Xiyuan Town, Jianning County, and scattered found in Taining County, northwestern Fujian Province, China. It grows on moist rocky soil in hilly areas or Danxia landforms at altitudes of 600–700 m (Figure 5). In Jianning County, this species grows sporadically and sparsely along roadsides on moist rocks, over about 500 m and with approximately 200 individuals, making this area the core habitat of this new species. In Taining County, it is restricted to isolated individuals (1–2 plants) within the Danxia landforms. Based on the current data, this species should be classified as Endangered (EN) according to the IUCN guidelines (IUCN Standards and Petitions Committee 2022), due to its restricted distribution with the number of known mature individuals in the wild population being less than 250.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/AF7AEE554F6E7B1AFF02F9BA64E54CE5	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
