A80887B103521073F597A0DCB783FEE5.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Pitnus bajaensis most closely resembles P. tucsonianus but can be distinguished by the interstrial row of suberect setae of the former versus the recumbent setae of the latter. The ninth antennomere of P. bajaensis is much more blunted and the antennae less slender in comparison to the antennae of P. tusconianus (Fig. 1).	en	Spalding, Grant K., Philips, T. A80887B103521071F597A4B8B753FA1D.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Pitnus clarionensis and P. falli Bellés appear the most similar but can most easily be distinguished by the presence in the former by two rows of elytral setae, one along the puncture rows and another in the interval between the punctures, and the semi-fusion of the first two abdominal ventrites with the suture at middle obsolete. In contrast, P. falli has a single row of suberect elytral setae per interval with those in the anterior half recumbent and parallel to the surface and all abdominal sutures distinct (Fig. 4).	en	Spalding, Grant K., Philips, T. Ventral Surface: granular with some shallow punctures and grooves; first and second abdominal ventrite sutures semi-fused medially (Fig. 5). A80887B103501071F597A0E0B03AFEE5.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Pitnus glabrus appears most similar to Pitnus pacatus Bellés. The antennae are more compact and the body distinctly more elongate than in P. pacatus (Fig. 7). However, the male genitalia if examined will easily distinguish this new species as the median lobe is more robust and about equal to the length of the parameres. In contrast, Pitnus pacatus has a median lobe that is more abruptly tapered at the tip, shorter than the parameres and the parameres are more robust and angle obliquely inwards near the apex (Fig. 21 and see Bellés 1992, Fig. 23 for an illustration).	en	Spalding, Grant K., Philips, T. The pronotum is also slightly rounded and not widened posteriorly as in the similar Pitnus galapagoensis (Franz) (Fig. 10). The parameres of P. peruvianus are much more sinuous distally and more sharply acuminate in comparison to P. galapagoensis where it is less sinuous and more rounded distally.	en	Spalding, Grant K., Philips, T. A80887B103561075F597A433B10DFFB9.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. A subcuboidal pronotum differentiates P. valentinei from P. galapagoensis that has a pronotum widened at the posterior lateral margin (Fig. 16). The ninth antennomere of P. valentinei has a blunt apex and a slightly flattened shape in contrast to the acuminate apex and long, slender shape of the ninth antennomere of P. galapagoensis.	en	Spalding, Grant K., Philips, T. A80887B103561075F597A433B10DFFB9.taxon	description	Description. Length of 0.9 to 1.1 mm. Head: eyes moderately convex; entire vertex surface granulate, setae recumbent and apices forked. Interantennal space between antennal insertions about equal or slightly smaller than maximum diameter of scape, laterally carinate, no groove (Fig. 18). Antennae slender, all segments longer than wide, ninth segment elliptical, slightly flattened, apex blunt. Pronotum: subcuboidal, rounded sides, narrowed at base. Entire surface finely granulate, anterior third with deep punctation, posterior surface with random, shallow punctures; long, recumbent setae, oriented anteriorly, covering dorsal surface. Elytra: subparallel sides, transverse strioles weak or not present, alternating setal rows with all setae bifurcated at apex, intrastrial rows of very long recumbent setae, inserted anterior to puncture; interstrial rows of long erect setae. Ventral surface: smooth with some shallow punctures, all abdominal ventrite sutures visible. Genitalia: Parameres broad, smoothly tapered beginning at apical 1 / 5 to tip, median lobe narrow and parallel sided from base to apical 1 / 5, at apex sides rapidly converging forming pointed tip (Fig. 24).	en	Spalding, Grant K., Philips, T. A80887B103561075F597A433B10DFFB9.taxon	discussion	Remarks: Pitnus valentinei is the first species of this genus known from Floreana Island in the Galápagoes Islands that now includes three species. Bellés (1992) reported this archipelago to have two species, P. pintae (Franz) and P. galapagoensis (Franz). Bellés described new subspecies for each of these taxa. Subspecies of P. pintae are found on Pinta and Santa Cruz while those of P. galapagoensis are known from Santa Fe and Santa Cruz. One possibly could consider each of these subspecies as distinct species and reflects the sometimes subjective nature of classification. The key below is for the species of Pitnus on the Pacific Ocean side of the Western Hemisphere and includes five of the new species described in this paper. For species on the Atlantic side, see the key in Bellés (1992). The three species (and two subspecies) known from the Galápagos Islands are island endemics and can probably can be easily identified from both their locality, with the key in Bellés, and for P. valentinei the diagnosis given above.	en	Spalding, Grant K., Philips, T.
