Diplommatina acme Laidlaw, 1949

Diagnosis. Shell small, sinistral, conical to very elongated conical; in some species, a keel emerges on the periphery and forms angular lower whorls. Shell surface usually covered with regular and dense radial ribs. In certain species, the ribs are modified into outwardly projecting triangular plates or coiled into tubular projections. Aperture oval, oblique to the shell axis. Peristome attached to the body whorl, double or triple; inner peristome protruding; outer peristome expanded but not reflected. Internal constriction (if present) ventrally situated with a thin radial palatal fold at its base. One short horizontal palatal lamella (if present) visible through translucent shell. Columellar tooth small. Umbilicus closed. Operculum corneous. Radula consists of a strong central tooth with a large central cusp and two pairs of smaller lateral cusps. Basal plate of central tooth with two attached small cusps. Lateral and marginal teeth with very short basal parts.

Deferential diagnosis. All known species of Pagodapalaina gen. nov., were previously assigned to Diplommatina Benson, 1849, but recent phylogenetic studies have consistently supported the monophyly of the new genus as the sister group to Diplommatina (Webster et al., 2012; Boonmachai et al., 2023; Köhler, 2024). Morphologically, the sinistrally coiled, conical shell of Pagodapalaina gen. nov. clearly distinguishes it from Diplommatina . In terms of radular structure, Pagodapalaina gen. nov. exhibits a significantly enlarged central cusp on the central tooth compared to Diplommatina, and both the lateral and marginal teeth possess extremely short basal parts, resulting in a radula that appears notably compact (see Boonmachai et al., 2023). Additionally, the basal plate of Diplommatina typically bears a single pointed cusp, whereas Pagodapalaina gen. nov., has two relatively blunt cusps (see Boonmachai et al., 2023; Z.-Y. Chen, unpublished data). This feature closely resembles that of Luzonocoptis Páll-Gergely & Hunyadi, 2017, a genus from Luzon Island, Philippines, which also possesses a sinistral shell (Páll-Gergely & Hunyadi, 2017). However, the cusps of Pagodapalaina gen. nov., are more robust, nearly conical in shape, and the two cusps on the basal plate of the central tooth are positioned adjacent to each other rather than being widely separated. This compact radula type may potentially be associated with saxicolous habits. From a broader comparative perspective, the keeled and elongate-conical whorls of Pagodapalaina gen. nov. readily distinguish it from the sinistral taxa occurring in adjacent regions (see Vermeulen, 1993; Greķe, 2017; Nurinsiyah & Hausdorf, 2017). Although certain species of Palaina O. Semper, 1865 (e.g. Palaina attenboroughi Greķe 2017, Palaina dohertyi E. A. Smith, 1897 and Palaina parietalis Neubert & Bouchet, 2015) exhibit a similar shell outline, their weak internal lamellar structure provides a clear means of separating them from Pagodapalaina gen. nov.

Etymology. The name of the new genus is derived from “Pagoda”, referring to the tiered, keeled and tower-like shape of the shell, reminiscent of East Asian pagodas, and diplommatinid genus name Palaina . This genus name is feminine.

Included species. See below.

Distribution. Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia. The known species of the new genus are distributed on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/972BDD17553D986DB6E6FB52FE223185	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. G. Davison, 20 Jan. 1991.

Etymology. We adopted Davison’s manuscript name with minor modification. The name hortulanica, meaning “garden-dwelling” in Latin, may refer to the flourishing vegetation of the type locality.

Diagnosis. The new species can be distinguished from most other species by its bearing relatively fewer whorls and a stouter (vs slender in other species) shell. Its overall shape resembles Pagodapalaina carinaspinosa (Maassen, 2002) comb. nov., P. gadutensis (Maassen, 2002) comb. nov., P. karoensis (Maassen, 2002) comb. nov., and P. krabiensis (Panha & Burch, 1998) comb. nov., but differs from them in its larger size and the rib structure.

Description. Shell small, sinistral, pale with yellow hue, elongated conical, with 5.75 convex whorls; suture impressed; width of body whorl slightly smaller than that of penultimate whorl; a keel emerges after the penultimate whorl and formed angular whorls. Protoconch consisting of 1.5 whorls, somewhat matte; boundary between protoconch and teleoconch not clear. Teleoconch surface with fine and regularly arranged radial and prosocline ribs, approximately 8–9 ribs per 500 μm on the body whorl, weak and dense spiral threads situated. Aperture oval, oblique to the shell axis. Peristome attached to the body whorl, double or triple; inner peristome protruding; outer peristome expanded but not reflected. Internal constriction ventrally present with a thin radial (to the shell axis) palatal fold at base. One horizontal palatal lamella observed through translucent shell. Columellar tooth small, downward sloping. Umbilicus closed. Operculum unknown.

Measurements. Shell height: 2.4 mm, shell width: 1.3 mm (holotype); shell height: 2.2–2.3 mm, shell width: both 1.2 mm (paratypes, n = 2)

Remarks. Taken directly from Davison’s note on specimen label: “In loose dry soil on the extreme north end of big limestone outcrop, about halfway up the slope to summit. In low forest of Streblus bushes, altitude 100 m. ”

Distribution. Malaysia: Perak. Contrary to the statement in the original description, the type material of Diplommatina lenggongensis nawawii could not be located in the NHM collections. The registration number ‘931229.1’ cited therein does not correspond to any recognised NHMUK catalogue number. Due to this discrepancy, and given that the original description lacks illustrations, the identity of the species cannot be confirmed based on the limited diagnostic information. We therefore treat it here as a species inquirenda, although its generic assignment appears to be unproblematic.

Distribution.
