Abdominal setae weak, sparse. Hypopygium usually quadrate, with sparse setosity; ventral base of genitalia without basal lobe or group of setae. Gonostylus elongate, without apical tooth; setae not differentiated. Tegmen large, with apex somewhat broadly round to trapezoid. Aedeagal rod long; fork-like structure absent; field with aedeagal teeth absent.

Etymology. The genus name is derived from “Lin’an”, a locality in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang Province, China, where Zhejiang A&F University is located. This institution houses nearly the entire current collection of Chinese Sciaridae . To be treated as feminine.

Remarks. Based on a combination of diagnostic morphological characters, Linana gen. nov. is best placed within the subfamily Sciarinae . Key characters supporting this placement include the presence of bottleneck-shaped flagellomeres, elongate maxillary palpi, a relatively long wing vein R 1, undifferentiated tibial organ, and a setose postpronotum, all of which are characteristic features of Sciarinae . The general shape of the flagellomere shows similarity to those observed in Sciara Meigen, and Hirtipennia Mohrig & Menzel. In addition, the absence of macrotrichia on the posterior wing veins is a character shared with Leptospina Mohrig & Menzel, but the new genus can readily be differentiated from the latter in the absence of apical gonostylar tooth. Genetically, the specimens of this Linana gen. nov. are almost 15% distant from the nearest neighbours, Leptospina dentata (Mohrig & Krivosheina) and Leptospina subdentata (Mohrig & Menzel) .

Distribution. The term primaria is a Latin word for the first or primary one, referring to the first species described in the genus.

Remarks. Linana primaria gen. et sp. nov. is designated as the type species of the newly erected genus Linana gen. nov. It is distinguished from L. confusa gen. et sp. nov. by subtle differences in male genital morphology, including the shape of gonostylus with configuration of the subapical megasetae, the outline of tegmen, and overall size of the habitus. The two subapical spines (megasetae) on the inner margin of gonostylus are relatively longer as compared to the spines of L. confusa gen. et sp. nov. In addition, the apex of the gonocoxite lack a differentiated long seta in L. primaria gen. et sp. nov., whereas, it is present in L. confusa gen. et sp. nov. Genetically, DNA barcodes from specimens of this species are nearly 14% divergent from specimens of the L. confusa gen. et sp. nov.

Distribution. Aedeagus very long; fork-like structure absent; field with aedeagal teeth absent.

Etymology. The term confusa is a Latin word for confused, referring to the morphological similarity and the potential for confusion with L. primaria gen. et sp. nov.

Remarks. Linana confusa gen. et sp. nov. is morphologically very similar to the type species, L. primaria gen. et sp. nov., which makes its recognition challenging on the basis of external characters alone. The differences are subtle, mainly involving the size of habitus, details of male genitalia, such as the proportion of gonostylar subapical megasetae, and the contour of the tegmen. The two subapical spines on the inner margin are relatively smaller as compared to the spines in L. primaria gen. et sp. nov. Moreover, the mouth-like groove that splits the apical and subapical spines is deeper in L. confusa gen. et sp. nov. than in L. primaria gen. et sp. nov. Molecular data provide strong evidence for its distinctiveness: DNA barcoding (COI sequences) places L. confusa gen. et sp. nov. in a distinct separate clade from L. primaria, confirming its validity as an independent species. Genetically, DNA barcodes from specimens of this species are nearly 14% divergent from specimens of the L. primaria gen. et sp. nov.

Distribution.
