Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo. Examined. New synonym.

Diagnosis. Both sexes can be easily distinguished from small Caenohalictus species by the mesoscutum sculpture, being coriaceous and sparsely punctate along the median line, polished and punctate at sides (Fig. 6C, 7C). Additional features are the legs dark brown, slightly lighter on the tarsi. Females have dark blue reflections on terga and mesepisternum, and dark setae along the body, especially on the head (Fig. 6A). Males have a non-crenulate, short antennae (not reaching tegula, with F2–11 with similar length while in other species the antennae are crenulated and F2 usually elongate in relation to F3–11), and the scutellum has a median longitudinal sulcus with dense punctation.

Redescription

Female: Body length x̄ =7.20 (N=5). Most of the females are green with a bluish metasoma, but some specimens are entirely blue or bluish-green. Males have bluish reflections.

Comments. Vachal (1903) described Halictus (Paragapostemon) curticeps based on a male specimen that was later included in Caenohalictus by Michener (1969b). More recently Caenohalictus mourei was described by Almeida & Laroca (2005) based on a female. After the analysis of images of the holotype of H. curticeps and the holotype of C. mourei, they are considered as synonyms as the following characteristics are present in both sexes: antennae completely darkened; mesoscutum coriaceous anteriorly, polished elsewhere, with dense punctation, sparser on the disc; legs completely dark brown; sterna without metallic reflexes.

Distribution. Caenohalictus implexus Moure, 1950

(Figs. 1A, 10–11, 28D–F, 30C)

Caenohalictus implexus Moure, 1950 . Type data: holotype ♀ Type locality: Paraguay, San Pedro, San Estanislao. Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales. Not examined.

Diagnosis. Small species (5–6 mm) similar to C. tesselatus and C. leticiae sp. nov. by the rugulose metapostnotum and olivaceus green body. It can be differentiated from C. tesselatus by black scape on both sexes (Fig. 10B, 11B), the lack of dense, yellow branched setae on mesoscutum of females (Fig. 10C) and S1 with few metallic reflections. Females can be separated from C. leticiae sp. nov. by the scutellum areolate and sparsely punctate (Fig. 10C), tarsi light brown to yellow and head as long as wide (Fig. 10B); mesepisternum and metanotum rugulose. Males differ in having flagellomeres 2–11 homogeneously covered by intermixed trichodea and placodea sensillae (Fig. 1A), mesoscutum entirely very sparsely punctate and propodeum lateral surface lineolate. The male is described here for the first time.

Redescription

Female: Body length x̄ =6.09 (N=5). ITD x̄ =1.19 (N=5). UID x̄ =0.93 (N=5). LID x̄ =0.88 (N=5). CLL x̄ =0.32 (N=5). Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Examined. New synonym.

Diagnosis. This species is similar to C. arcuatus sp. nov. by the transverse striation on metapostnotum, but in C. incertus the striae are parallel to weakly curved. It can be distinguished by both sexes being generally larger; integument color metallic green; terga with metallic area occupying the entire disc, and with green or golden reflections (Fig. 12D, 13D) and clypeus and supraclypeal area polished to slightly coriaceous. Females are distinct by having the clypeus with a longitudinal depression on the apex, and apical dark band occupying around one half of clypeus length (Fig. 12B). Males have the head as long as wide (Fig. 13B).

Redescription

Female: Body length x̄ =7.20 (N=5). ITD x̄ =1.44 (N=5). UID x̄ =1.16 (N=5). LID x̄ =1.06 (N=5). CLL x̄ =0.41 (N=5). The terga from the females of this species can vary from metallic green or goldish green, and the sterna color is very variable, ranging from yellow to black.

Comments. RBG examined the types of Halictus vallensis and Halictus cicindulus (MHNP) and the size and sculpturing pattern strongly suggests that they are conspecific. Both specimens are within the delineation of Caenohalictus incertus, so we follow the synonym proposed by Moure & Hurd (1987) for H. vallensis and proposed a new synonym with H. cicindulus .

Distribution. Easily separated from other Caenohalictus from southern Brazil by having long maxillary palpomeres, with each palpomere measuring about 2 to 3 times the MOD in females (Fig. 16A), and about 2.5 times the MOD in males. Females can also be distinguished by the propodeal pit enclosed by strong carinae, carinae arched outwards (Fig. 2C). The elongate palpomeres and propodeal pit carina also distinguish it from C. oresicoetes . From the C. sesquipalpis sp. nov., females can be separated also by longer head, male S6 having a slight invagination (Fig. 26B), and longer eye setae, measuring around 1.0 times the MOD.
