Type species: Aleurodes spiniferus Quaintance, 1903: 63–64, by original designation.

Diagnosis. Pupal case usually dark brown or black in color, often surrounded by a short waxy fringe. Margin toothed, or serrated, not deflexed. Submarginal area not separated from dorsal disk. Submargin often with a row of small knobbed setae. Thoracic and caudal tracheal pores not differentiated from margin or indicated by modified teeth. Dorsum with glandular spines. Longitudinal and transverse moulting sutures nearly reaching the margin. Cephalic, eighth abdominal and caudal setae present. First abdominal segment with a pair of glandular spines (usually treated as setae); in some species, this pair of spines with shrunk apices. Vasiform orifice often elevated, subcircular or subcordate; operculum similar in shape and almost filling the orifice, obscuring the lingula. Caudal ridges and furrow absent.

Remarks. The number and location of spines are crucial in species identification, but the sexual dimorphism in some species remains undescribed.

Key to the puparia of Aleurocanthus species of China

Note. This species, described from Thailand, is newly reported here from China. Dubey & Ko (2012) stated this species shows extreme dimorphism. The original description of puparia differs from the illustration (for instance “abdomen with about 19 submarginal spines...”). The puparium has been redrawn (Fig. 11). The number of submarginal spines on the abdomen varies to 21 pairs, and also in asymmetry between the left vs. right sides in some puparia. Additionally, the arrangement of tubercles in rows are not consistent among puparia. This species closely resembles Aleurocanthus siamensis Takahashi, 1942 in having interrupted rows of submarginal spines at intervals of 3 spines, but differs in possessing small rounded tubercles in rows on the abdomen, and in the number of submarginal spines on abdomen (15 pairs in A. siamensis).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/8C5D878AFFAC7E5514AA7DB6FCE5F8C8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hong Kong, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Taiwan, Yunnan, Zhejiang (Yan & Bai 2017).

Comments. This species infests various economically important crops such as Citrus trees, pear trees, and others. It is difficult to distinguish it from Aleurocanthus camelliae, which develops on tea trees, in terms of the morphological structure of the puparium. We collected some specimens from Zhejiang Province on Citrus reticulata .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/8C5D878AFFA07E5814AA7ABCFEA9FC41	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
