7F7C87B0D544FFBF8D96FBF7759448D2.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The type material of O. variegatus consists of two syntypes deposited at the NHMUK, both from Volcán de Chiriquí, Panama (Fig. 8), which were examined through habitus photographs kindly provided by Keita Matsumoto (Fig. 1). The external characters are given by Sharp (1900) in the original description and later supplemented by Sen Gupta & Crowson (1971) in their discussion of generic features. Two complete sinuous black bands on the elytra are clearly visible in both specimens, along with additional irregular bands as described by Sharp, particularly in the specimen that was illustrated in the original description, NHMUK 015535851 (Figs 1 A – B). The metatarsus of this specimen appears less slender than that of the other syntype, which may reflect sexual dimorphism, although this difference was not observed in the new species described herein. To account for these minor differences between the two specimens and to ensure nomenclatural stability, the specimen NHMUK 015535851 is hereby designated as the lectotype of Othniocryptus variegatus Sharp.	en	Silva, Thiago J. Sexual dimorphism. The only differences found in general morphology between the sexes were in the mandibles. Unlike males, the mandibles of the female (Figs 5 B – C) are symmetrical and lack subapical serrations on the left mandible. During the slide mounting, the female’s mandibles were accidentally damaged, which conveniently allowed the visualization of the molar surface. Variation. The paratypes exhibit a lighter body coloration than the holotype, with a variable macula on the pronotum and a fainter elytral band. The black triangular macula in the scutellar region of the elytra is more pronounced in the paratypes. This color variation may be attributed to intraspecific differences between the populations from the two collection sites (São Paulo and Minas Gerais), which may be common in the genus, as noted by Leschen (2003). The observed differences could also result from differing collection dates (1962 and 2023) or variation in fixation techniques, with potential alterations commonly seen in older pinned beetles. Aside from differences in body size and general coloration, no additional intraspecific variation was observed.	en	Silva, Thiago J. 7F7C87B0D545FFB48D96F969775D4E8B.taxon	etymology	Etymology. The species is named after the old denomination of its type locality, the Ipiranga (Ypiranga) District of São Paulo (derived from the Tupi-Guarani language, meaning “ red river ”), where the holotype was collected.	en	Silva, Thiago J. 7F7C87B0D545FFB48D96F969775D4E8B.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Othniocryptus ypirangensis sp. nov. can be distinguished from O. centromaculatus sp. nov. by the shape of the pronotum, which is distinctly more transverse and differs in the proportional length at which it is widest. Additionally, it differs in body coloration, being less reddish, with the thorax not completely black ventrally, as well as in male genitalia. The mouthparts and genitalia of the female examined by Leschen (2003), possibly an O. centromaculatus female, is similar to those of the O. ypirangensis (Richard Leschen, personal communication). In comparison to O. variegatus, the metatarsi in O. ypirangensis are not variable among specimens, and the elytral pattern appears to lack the additional and interrupted bands, that may be obfuscated by the loss of white setae, thus fresh, undamaged specimens are required to confirm the colouration. Moreover, O. ypirangensis has subapical serrations on the left mandible of the male, two lacinial spines and ligula wider than prementum, differing in these mouthpart features from an unidentified Othniocryptus species examined by Leschen (2003), which lacked serrations on the mandible, had a single lacinial spine and ligular membrane equal in width to the prementum. Additionally, the wing venation presents a slight difference in CuA 1 compared to an unidentified Othniocryptus wing provided by Lawrence et al. (2021). Othniocryptus ypirangensis sp. nov. closely resembles O. variegatus in its elytral pattern. Leschen (2003) examined Othniocryptus specimens from South America and noted potential intraspecific color variation, though he did not specify the regions from which those specimens originated. During recent visits to Brazilian collections housing numerous beetles from the Amazon Forest, no specimens of the genus were found. Since the cladistic study of Leschen (2003) did not include male genital characters and no specimens of the genus were examined from localities between Panama and southeastern Brazil, in addition to the differences listed above, I propose making the new name available for further studies on variation within Othniocryptus, once additional specimens are collected from diverse sites.	en	Silva, Thiago J. 7F7C87B0D54FFFB68D96FE1A778A4C7B.taxon	etymology	Etymology. The species is named after the presence of a subrectangular black macula located at the center of the elytral disc, along the suture, which is clearly distinguishable from the reddish background.	en	Silva, Thiago J. 7F7C87B0D54FFFB68D96FE1A778A4C7B.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The female of Othniocryptus dissected and used in the cladistic work of Leschen (2003) belongs to O. centromaculatus sp. nov., collected at the same site by the same collector. Its morphological characters match those of the female of O. ypirangensis sp. nov. described in this work (R. Leschen pers. comm.). Othniocryptus centromaculatus is clearly distinguishable from other species of the genus by its notably reddish body color, lacking the complete black bands on the elytra and the thorax being entirely black ventrally. Despite the elytral coloration in this genus being partially the result of differences in setae coloration, in O. ypirangensis and O. variegatus the underlying cuticle in the bands is distinctly darkened. Nevertheless, the clearly blackish macula of O. centromaculatus may be more evident due to the partial abrasion of setae in that region. It also differs by having the pronotum less transverse and shorter pubescence compared to the other species. In the male genitalia, it differs from O. ypirangensis in the shape of the median lobe and the excavation (Fig. 7 D) of the expanded apex and relative length of the anterior struts. The distinct differences in male genitalia and body coloration are sufficient to recognize these as separate species.	en	Silva, Thiago J.
