Meyeria (Candolle 1836: 670) Baker (1884: 252) .

Meyeria Candolle (1836: 670) .

Type species:— Calea myrtifolia (Candolle 1836: 670) Baker (1884: 260) .

So far, Calea sect. Meyeria included nineteen species (Bueno & Heiden 2022a, 2022b). Based on the phylogenetic reconstruction presented in Bueno (2023), the section is redefined with a narrower morphological circumscription proposed here to include shrubs with a cymose capitulescence, bearing capitula with four or more foliaceous outer phyllaries and having the cypsela longer than the pappus. Under this new circumscription, the subgenus comprises nine taxa with eight species ( C. funkiana, C. marginata, C. myrtifolia, C. parvifolia, C. phyllolepis, C. pruskiana, C. subintegerrima, C. triantha) and one nothospecies ( C. × parviantha). A monophyletic C. subg. Meyeria requires the exclusion of the following 11 species: Calea arachnoidea, C. chodatii Hassler (1915: 174), C. grandiflora, C. heteropappa Pruski (1988: 346–347), C. ilienii Malme (1933: 94–95), C. kristiniae Pruski (1984: 98–102), C. monocephala Dusén (1910: 32), C. nervosa G.M. Barroso (1975: 109), C. quadrifolia Pruski & Urbatsch (1988: 341), C. semirii (1998: 698), and C. sessilifolia . These species were moved into another subgenera and sections according to Bueno (2023).

Pruski (2023) resurrected Meyeria and segregated it from Calea based on morphological characters. Based on Bueno (2023), we disagree with the recognition of Meyeria as distinct of Calea and synonymize the species that Pruski (2023) first combined to Meyeria, which are part of Calea . subg. Meyeria .

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/73128785FFB7FFE32E87FF38DEFAC978	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Sellow s.n. (P [P02140741]!; isotype G [G00456488, fragment], digital image!).

Note:— Calea marginata was proposed by Blake (1937) based on the type specimens of Meyeria longifolia Candolle. He proposed the new name because the specific epithet was already preoccupied by C. longifolia Gardner (1848: 418) . The superfluous name C. barrosoana was proposed by Robinson (1979) as a new name for M. longifolia Candolle, since he was unaware of Blake’s previous publication.

In the protologue, the type specimen collector of C. marginata is not indicated. The specimen label of P02140741 has only an indication of C. Gaudichaud-Beaupré ’s name, which could suggest that he was the collector of the specimen. However, most of the materials assigned as collections done by him should be interpreted as belonging to his personal herbarium, as some of them were, for example, originally collected by F. Sellow (Moraes 2020). Furthermore, it is known that C. Gaudichaud-Beaupré has never collected in the habitat of this species in the “campos gerais” of the Paraná and São Paulo states border (Moraes 2020). So, it is assumed that the type specimen corresponds to a collection by F. Sellow that belonged to Gaudichaud-Beaupré personal herbarium. Furthermore, the specimen could not have been collected in 1833, as Sellow had already passed away at that given date. Pruski (2023) indicates that P02140741 would be a specimen collected in 1833, however this year refers to the year when Gaudichaud - Beaupré incorporated this Sellow collection into his personal herbarium (Moraes 2023).

According to Herter (1933), Sellow traveled between 1828 and 1829 through the regions where this species naturally occurs from Curitiba (Paraná state) to Itapeva (São Paulo state) through the “Caminho das Tropas”, an ancient cattle trading route in Brazil linking South and Southeastern Brazil from the 17th to the 19th century (Souza 2014). Considering the timespan when Sellow may have collected the specimen, this area referred in the label as São Paulo today is part of the state of Paraná, which was established in 1853 following the emancipation of land that was formerly part of the state of São Paulo. The available data does not allow mapping the precise locality nor can the collection year be ascertained. To reflect this uncertainty, we provide a range of possible collection years and the collection locality as the border area between these two states.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/73128785FFB7FFE32E87FBA8DE72C257	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The specimen deposited in B was lost in a fire during World War II (Grimé & Plowman 1986), but a photograph of it is available at F. The type specimen of this species was interpreted as collected by C. Gaudichaud-Beaupré, whereas it was in fact collected by F. Sellow (Moraes 2020) and later incorporated in his personal herbarium. The precise locality of this collection was also difficult to identify. The available data does not allow us to map the precise locality nor can the collection year be ascertained. To reflect this uncertainty, we present the range of possible years and the collection locality as the border between the states of Paraná and São Paulo, as discussed for C. marginata . Pruski (2023) considered P02140753 as a holotype, but the existence of F244778 and G00456484 implies that these materials were syntypes. Thus, we designate the specimen deposited in P as the lectotype, since the duplicate deposited in G is incomplete.

The specimen Dusén 2809 deposited in F [F0 BN015383] displays the name Calea paranensis, which was never published (nom. in sched.). However, as this photograph was taken from a specimen deposited in B that was destroyed, it is not accessible anymore (Grimé & Plowman 1986). Unfortunately, it was not possible to find any remaining specimen collected by F. Sellow numbered as 1041, 2534 or 3140 in the K herbarium, neither in other herbaria consulted.

According to Herter (1945), the numbers that Baker (1884) indicated as types do not refer to specimens collected in São Paulo state. These numbers from Sellow are from a period when he was traveling by boat between Rio Pardo and Porto Alegre, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Calea phyllolepis occurs naturally and is well represented by several collections along this area, in accordance with the species description, numbering and information provided by Herter (1945). Additionally, this species does not occur in São Paulo and Paraná states (Reis-Silva et al. 2023). Therefore, it is assumed that the type specimens were in fact collected in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/73128785FFB6FFE52E87F901D82BCB0F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The whereabouts of the original specimens studied by Vellozo is unknown, but the plates published earlier (Vellozo 1831) are accepted as types for the new taxa described by him in the Flora Fluminensis.

According to Pruski (2005), this plate undoubtedly represents this species and we agree with his findings. The monumental work of Vellozo (1829 [1825], 1831, 1881) in Flora Fluminensis describes the flora of the state of Rio de Janeiro, which occupied an area whose state borders has changed since the time of publication. According to Pastore et al. (2021), the specimen on which the illustration is based upon was collected in Cunha, São Paulo, where it still can be found. This species does not occur within the current borders of the state of Rio de Janeiro (Reis-Silva et al. 2023).

The protologue of M. hispida Candolle (1836) and the study by Pruski (2005) do not indicate the collection site of the type specimen, but we found this information in Baker (1884). Interestingly, this synonym was collected between Mogi das Cruzes and São Paulo in São Paulo state, which are nearby Cunha that currently lies within São Paulo state boundaries.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/73128785FFB1FFE52E87FBE8DC38CD77	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
