6C5CC960FFACC92979B4FC82CEC9FF26.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. The genus Metadon is recognized by vein R 4 + 5 with posterior appendix, a character shared only with the genera Microdon and Paramixogaster in India. It differs from these and all other microdontine genera by the following combination of characters: anepisternum pilose entirely or nearly so; more elongate abdomen (1.5 – 2.5 × as long as wide); phallus of male genitalia barely projecting beyond apex of hypandrium and furcated aedeagus. Except for the four eastern Palaearctic species, Metadon bifasciatus Matsumura, M. brunneipennis (Huo, Ren & Zheng), M. pingliensis (Huo, Ren & Zheng) and M. spuribifasciatus (Huo, Ren & Zheng), all other Metadon species have this unique combination of morphological features (Reemer & Ståhls 2013 a; Gilasian et al. 2015).	en	Sankararaman, Hariharakrishnan, Anooj, Sainulabdeen Sulaikha (2025): Review of the Indian species of Metadon Reemer, 2013 (Diptera: Syrphidae: Microdontinae), with description of two new species. The adults of Metadon mimic aculeate wasps belonging to Vespidae and Crabronidae (Hymenoptera). 6C5CC960FFABC92879B4FB3FC8C5FF38.taxon	discussion	Remarks. M. annandalei (Brunetti) was originally described based on a male specimen collected from Soondrijal (Sundarijal now), Nepal, deposited in the NCZSI. This species looks similar to the Afrotropical species M. inermis (Loew) in having black thorax and brick red abdomen, but can be separated by the black legs (in M. inermis, legs brick red to tawny, except coxae). The coloration of body and wings of M. annandalei are very similar to those of Anterhynchium abdominale (Illiger) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) (Fig. 3), a widely distributed potter wasp species in India, which might be the possible model for this species.	en	Sankararaman, Hariharakrishnan, Anooj, Sainulabdeen Sulaikha (2025): Review of the Indian species of Metadon Reemer, 2013 (Diptera: Syrphidae: Microdontinae), with description of two new species. 6C5CC960FFAAC92B79B4FA7FC91CFC6C.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Body length: 13 mm. M. auricinctus looks close to M. ghorpadei sp. nov. and M. reemeri sp. nov. in having a dark (sub) apical wing spot, however it can be differentiated from the latter two by the red coloured abdominal tergites 4 and 5 (in M. ghorpadei and M. reemeri tergite 4 and 5 black). It is also relatively similar to M. ruficaudus (Brunetti) by the red coloured tergite 4 and 5, but can be differentiated by the coloration of antenna and apical wing spot (In M. ruficaudus antenna tawny-red and apical wing spot absent). Head. Face ferruginous; golden pilose, occiput ventrally golden pilose (Fig. 4 B). Eye bare. Antenna black, except scape reddish brown at base; scape as long as combined length of pedicel and basoflagellomere; base of the scape somewhat brownish. Thorax. Brunetti (1908) misinterpreted the holotype as female, on re – examining the holotype at NHMUK, Reemer and Ståhls (2013 a) corrected it as male. Apart from the type locality Kandy, Sri Lanka, Brunetti (1923) listed this species from India, “ Pashoke, Darjiling district ” (Peshok tea garden, Darjeeling, West Bengal now) and “ Talewadi, N. Kanara district ” (Talawade, Pune, Maharastra now). There are observations in iNaturalist, with the information on the locality obtained from these observations, this species has been reported from: Ratnapura, Sri Lanka (https: // www. inaturalist. org / observations / 25222047) and Matheran, Maharashtra (https: // www. inaturalist. org / observations / 54921821) confirms the distributional range of this species.	en	Sankararaman, Hariharakrishnan, Anooj, Sainulabdeen Sulaikha (2025): Review of the Indian species of Metadon Reemer, 2013 (Diptera: Syrphidae: Microdontinae), with description of two new species. 6C5CC960FFA5C92179B4FB69C9C0FB32.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This new species shows resemblance to the potter wasp Rhynchium brunneum (Fabricius) (Vespidae: Eumeninae) (Fig. 14 B), especially in the flight and coloration of the wings with a small apical spot, abdominal tergites and legs. The wasps were also observed in the same habitat from where M. reemeri sp. nov. (Figs 7, 8, 14 A) was collected. Rhynchium brunneum could be the possible model of Metadon spp. which has golden yellow or tawny-red pilosity on the body. Furthermore, both the model and mimic had similar flight patterns and the behaviour of actively displaying themselves to daylight.	en	Sankararaman, Hariharakrishnan, Anooj, Sainulabdeen Sulaikha (2025): Review of the Indian species of Metadon Reemer, 2013 (Diptera: Syrphidae: Microdontinae), with description of two new species. 6C5CC960FFA3C92379B4FABECE65FE18.taxon	discussion	Remarks. M. ruficaudus was described by Brunetti (1907) based on a single male from Calcutta, West Bengal during September, 1904. Brunetti (1907) misinterpreted the holotype as a female, on re-examining the holotype at NHMUK this is found to be a male. Sack (1922) reported this species from Taiwan. The type was in Brunetti’s collection until 1927, after which it was deposited in NHMUK. Additionally, there was also a male specimen collected from Chapra, West Bengal, available at NPC (Fig. 10) which looks close to M. ruficaudus by having hyaline wings tinged with dark yellow and tergite 4 entirely red pilose. However, it differs from M. ruficaudus by having yellow head and abdominal tergite 4 with a fascia of golden pile along the anterior margin (in M. ruficaudus, the head is black and tergite 4 without fascia of golden pile).	en	Sankararaman, Hariharakrishnan, Anooj, Sainulabdeen Sulaikha (2025): Review of the Indian species of Metadon Reemer, 2013 (Diptera: Syrphidae: Microdontinae), with description of two new species.
