Microdon wulpii Mik: 143.

Type locality: Indonesia, Sumatra.

Diagnosis. The genus Metadon is recognized by vein R 4+5 with posterior appendix, a character shared only with the genera Microdon and Paramixogaster in India. It differs from these and all other microdontine genera by the following combination of characters: anepisternum pilose entirely or nearly so; more elongate abdomen (1.5–2.5× as long as wide); phallus of male genitalia barely projecting beyond apex of hypandrium and furcated aedeagus. Except for the four eastern Palaearctic species, Metadon bifasciatus Matsumura, M. brunneipennis (Huo, Ren & Zheng), M. pingliensis (Huo, Ren & Zheng) and M. spuribifasciatus (Huo, Ren & Zheng), all other Metadon species have this unique combination of morphological features (Reemer & Ståhls 2013a; Gilasian et al. 2015).

Biology. Host ants associated and immature stages of none of the Metadon spp. are known. The adults of Metadon mimic aculeate wasps belonging to Vespidae and Crabronidae ( Hymenoptera). The coloration of body and wings of M. annandalei are very similar to those of Anterhynchium abdominale (Illiger) ( Hymenoptera: Vespidae) (Fig. 3), a widely distributed potter wasp species in India, which might be the possible model for this species.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6C5CC960FFABC92879B4FB3FC8C5FF38	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. We are pleased to name this new species after Dr. Menno Reemer (Naturalis Biodiversity Center), a Dutch entomologist, in recognition of his significant work on subfamily Microdontinae and also for his generous help rendered to the authors at various stages of this work.

Remarks. This new species shows resemblance to the potter wasp Rhynchium brunneum (Fabricius) ( Vespidae: Eumeninae) (Fig. 14B), especially in the flight and coloration of the wings with a small apical spot, abdominal tergites and legs. The wasps were also observed in the same habitat from where M. reemeri sp. nov. (Figs 7, 8, 14A) was collected. Rhynchium brunneum could be the possible model of Metadon spp. which has golden yellow or tawny-red pilosity on the body. Furthermore, both the model and mimic had similar flight patterns and the behaviour of actively displaying themselves to daylight.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6C5CC960FFA5C92179B4FB69C9C0FB32	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Brunetti (1907) misinterpreted the holotype as a female, on re-examining the holotype at NHMUK this is found to be a male. Sack (1922) reported this species from Taiwan. The type was in Brunetti’s collection until 1927, after which it was deposited in NHMUK.

Additionally, there was also a male specimen collected from Chapra, West Bengal, available at NPC (Fig. 10) which looks close to M. ruficaudus by having hyaline wings tinged with dark yellow and tergite 4 entirely red pilose. However, it differs from M. ruficaudus by having yellow head and abdominal tergite 4 with a fascia of golden pile along the anterior margin (in M. ruficaudus, the head is black and tergite 4 without fascia of golden pile).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6C5CC960FFA3C92379B4FABECE65FE18	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
