Basal part of forewing (one quarter to one third of FWL) light yellow to glossy golden, sharply contrasting with the darker (usually bronze to coppery bronze) colouration of the medial and apical parts of the forewing.

2. Characteristic pattern of two longitudinal silver stripes starting at the forewing base and forming a <-shaped figure, which in some species is reduced to two short stripes parallel to the costa.

3. Frons glossy silver or covered by translucent scales.

4. Vertex pale yellow to ochreous.

5. Male PLB very short (0.3‒0.8 × vertical eye diameter).

6. Male compound eyes strongly enlarged, closely approaching or touching each other posteriorly.

7. Base of proboscis thickened with light ochreous to bronze or coppery scales often forming a conspicuous brush.

The profusella species group may be remotely related to the kalshoveni species group, which includes seven Nemophora species from the islands of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (Kozlov 2016b). This assumption is supported by two characters. First, the proboscis of kalshoveni -group species is densely covered with raised dark brown to black scales and appears unusually thick (compare with character no. 7 above). Second, the colouration of the male antenna in both groups often differs between the basal, medial and apical parts of the flagellum.

The profusella species group may eventually be subdivided, as it includes species that differ markedly in the morphology of the female antenna. Females of four species ( N. meeki, N. hippophylax, N. profusella and N. sulphurea) possess a characteristic basal scale-thickening on the flagellum, whereas females of another four species ( N. ochrodorsella, N. chrysodonta, N. plutodotis and N. vasilyi) lack raised scales in the basal part of the flagellum. Thus, sexual dimorphism in antennal structure is present in only some species. However, the absence of information on female antennal morphology in 13 species currently precludes formal subdivision of the profusella group. Therefore, the sequence of species in both the checklist and the main text follows that of the key below.

Nemophora hippophylax (Meyrick, 1930)

Nemophora ochrodorsella Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora meeki Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora wallacei Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora sulphurea Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora fuscofasciella Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora vasilyi Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora profusella (Walker, 1866)

Nemophora photodoxa (Meyrick, 1930)

Nemophora baliella Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora homoeotropa Diakonoff, 1955

Nemophora chrysorrhabda Diakonoff, 1955

Nemophora cupriantennella Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora neuguineae Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora sulawesiensis Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora chrysodonta Diakonoff, 1951

Nemophora plutodotis Diakonoff, 1951

Nemophora illustrella Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora cheesmanae Kozlov, sp. nov.

Nemophora xanthobasella (Snellen, 1885)

Key to the species

1. The specific epithet is derived from ochra (Latin: ochre) and dorsum (Latin: back) and refers to the diagnostic character of this species.

Comments. Although Walsingham clearly labelled the holotype as a new species from a new genus, he never published descriptions of either the species or the genus.

No differences in thoracic dorsum colour were found between males and females of the four species of the profusella group for which both sexes are known; hence, there is probably no sexual dimorphism in this trait. A female with ochreous dorsum could therefore only be associated with a male sharing this feature. Males of only two species, N. sulawesiensis (Fig. 25) and N. plutodotis (Fig. 27, 28), have dull yellow spots on glossy dorsum, but their external appearance greatly differs from N. ochrodorsella . Therefore, this female is described as a new species rather than being associated with any of the eleven profusella -group species known from males only.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6F72C74CFF84FF9EFF5BF91D09051419	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Nemophora sulphurea markedly differs from all species of the profusella group by the conspicuously swollen distal margin of the vinculum (in lateral view) and the presence of four processes at the tip of the phallus. It is similar to N. homoeotropa (Figs. 19, 20) but differs by the entirely dark coppery brown hindwing, short silver stripes in the basal part of the forewing, moderately long PLB and long vinculum.

Description. Male (Fig. 6). FWL 7.2‒7.4 mm; WLR 0.40. Vertex ochreous; frons glossy silver; piliform scales around antennal bases ochreous to yellow. PLB 0.7 × vertical eye diameter (1.3‒1.7 × length of scape), light ochreous brown. Proboscis brown, basally thickened with dark bronze to coppery scales. Eyes enlarged, occipitally closely approaching but never touching each other; interocular index 1.6. Antenna 3.1‒3.3 × FWL. Yellow band of fascia moderately wide (0.15 × FWL at costa), narrows towards dorsum; its internal margin wave-shaped, reaches costa at 0.40 × FWL. This yellow band internally bordered by 2‒3 rows of dark brown scales at costa but only 0‒1 row at dorsum; externally with dark brown markings at costa, M stem and dorsum. Outer wing margin with compact dark brown spot between M3 and CuA1; its size varies from very small (10‒12 dark scales) to very large (0.3 × forewing width). Fringe bronze. Hindwing brown with coppery tint; costal area light grey; fringe grey to brown. Legs bronze to coppery brown; apices of all segments darker than bases; hind tibia dorsally with dense row of coppery brown piliform scales. Epiphysis at 0.5, reaching apex of tibia. Abdomen pale ochreous yellow to light brown, tip darker than base.

Female (Fig. 7). FWL 7.3 mm. Antenna 2.0 × FWL; basal part of flagellum (0.8 × FWL) densely covered with raised elongate dark brown to purplish-black scales forming a distinct scale-thickening; a short part of flagellum beyond this thickening bright white, then colour gradually changes to bronze distally. Vinculum 3.3‒3.5 × length of valva, V-shaped; lateral margins slightly concave; distal margin gently W-shaped (in ventral view) and conspicuously swollen (in lateral view). Tips of valvae and tegumen at about same level. Ventral margin of valva bent at 0.75‒0.80 × total length; dorsal margin concave; tip of valva widely to narrowly rounded. Valvae fused basally up to 0.15‒0.25 × total length; internal valvar margins indistinct. Anellus 0.65‒0.70 × length of valva. Transtilla with short medial process. Juxta 0.65‒0.70 × length of phallus; arrow head narrow (WLR 0.35‒0.45), with long pointed apex and short pointed lateral arms. Phallus 0.95‒1.00 × length of vinculum, nearly straight; apical quarter directed posteroventrally, with four slender processes not projecting laterally; largest process hook-shaped; base of phallus bell-shaped.

Distribution. Indonesia (Papua).

Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from sulphur (Latin: sulphur), referring to the colour of the forewing pattern.

Comments. The paratype bearing label no. 41735 was identified by Walsingham as N. profusella, according to his notebook kept in NHM. Four of the five remaining specimens from the same series (41731‒41734) belong to N. profusella; the whereabouts and identity of specimen no. 41736 are unknown. Although Walsingham clearly labelled some of the N. sulphurea paratypes as a new species from a new genus, he never published descriptions of either the species or the genus.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6F72C74CFF88FF92FF5BFF210DEA11B5	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Nemophora profusella differs from all other species of the profusella group by the combination of a uniformly dark hindwing, a dark-ringed base of the male antenna and the presence of a dark spot (sometimes very large, or several spots) at the outer forewing margin. It differs from the externally similar N. hippophylax (males of which are unknown) by the light grey colour of the hindwing fringe.

Description. Male (Fig. 11‒14). FWL 6.3–8.1 mm; WLR 0.40. Vertex ochreous brown; frons glossy silver; piliform scales around antennal bases ochreous. PLB 0.4–0.5 × vertical eye diameter (0.9–1.2 × length of scape), light ochreous brown. Proboscis brown, basally thickened with bronze scales. Eyes enlarged, posteriorly closely approaching, sometimes touching each other; interocular index 1.2–1.4; occipital index 0–0.10. Antenna 3.6– 4.2 × FWL, without pegs. Scape dark bronze; flagellum (except for 3–5 basal segments) light yellow to white; flagellomeres 5 to 26–35 with rings of dark scales. Tegula and thoracic dorsum glossy bronze. Forewing (Fig. 40) dark brown with intense coppery iridescence; pattern bright ochreous yellow and dark brown. Yellow colour expands from wing base to 0.25‒0.37 × FWL along costa and 0.18‒0.25 × FWL along dorsum; silver stripes in this basal field reach 0.25–0.27 × FWL; anal margin without black scales. Extent of yellow colour in forewing fascia variable, from complete band to costal spot of 0.35 × forewing width; internal margin of this band (or spot) nearly straight, reaching costa at 0.38–0.49 × FWL and extending along costa for 0.06–0.14 × FWL. This yellow band (or spot) on both sides bordered by dark brown bands of variable width, which always reach dorsum. Outer wing margin between M2 and CuA2 with 1–4 dark brown spots. Fringe bronze. Hindwing purplish brown; costal area grey; fringe grey to bronze. Legs brown dorsally, yellowish brown ventrally; apices of all segments darker than bases; hind tibia with dense, long piliform scales. Epiphysis at 0.6, reaching apex of tibia. Abdomen dorsally ochreous yellow, ventrally brown.

Female (Fig. 15). FWL 7.6–8.3 mm. Antenna dark brown (length unknown); basal part thickened with black scales that are appressed at the flagellar base but raised from 0.3 to 0.7 × FWL, forming characteristic scale-thickening. Otherwise similar to male.

Male genitalia (Figs. 57, 72). Tegumen dome-shaped, with prominent medial ridge. Socii 1.6–1.8 × medial diameter of phallus. Vinculum 2.6–3.0 × length of valva, V-shaped; lateral margins almost straight to slightly concave; distal margin gently W-shaped. Tips of valvae and tegumen at about same level. Ventral margin of valva gently bent at 0.75 × total length; dorsal margin slightly convex; tip of valva rounded. Ventral margins of valvae closely approach at 0.20–0.25 × total length but are fused basally only up to 0.15–0.20 × total length, forming short and wide notch in distal parts of valvar bases; internal valvar margins distinct. Anellus 0.55–0.60 × length of valva. Transtilla with short medial process. Juxta 0.55–0.65 × length of phallus; arrow head extremely narrow (WLR 0.25–0.35), with pointed tip and moderately long pointed lateral arms. Phallus 1.00–1.05 × length of vinculum, Cshaped; apex with two hook-shaped processes, tips of which vary from pointed to narrowly rounded and directed posteroventrally to anterolaterallty; base of phallus narrowly funnel-shaped.

Distribution. Indonesia (Papua), Papua New Guinea.

Comments. Walker (1866) indicated the number of specimens he studied by placing letters in front of the collecting locality, with ‘a.’ referring to a single specimen. This letter, for example, appears in the description of Nemotois tristrigella on the previous page of the same work in which N. profusella was described. However, no such letter appears in front of “New Guinea ” in reference to N. profusella . Thus, Walker (1866) did not explicitly indicate that the description of N. profusella was based on a single specimen. Therefore, I designate the only surviving type as the lectotype rather than the holotype. This lectotype was presumably collected by A. R. Wallace in 1858 at the western side of Papua Island (Waigeo, Salawati or Manokwari; www.papua-insects.nl).

The identity of N. profusella had long been confusing, particularly because Walker (1866, p. 1816) described the male antenna as “silvery white, cupreous at the base”. Consistently, Meyrick (1930, p. 571) noted that in N. profusella “the antennae are not ringed”. However, the lectotype designated from the NHM collection has ringed antennae. If we assume that “the base”, as defined by Walker (1866), extended to one-third of the flagellum, then this trait, in combination with the forewing pattern, fits N. neuguineae rather than N. profusella in its current understanding.

Diakonoff (1955, p. 144) wrote that he had seen “fine photographs of the genitalia of the type specimen (male) in the British Museum” provided by J. D. Bradley. However, the abdomen of the specimen designated as the lectotype had long been missing, and there is no record of a genitalia slide made from the lectotype of N. profusella . Some genitalia glued to a card without a corresponding number are kept next to the lectotype in the NHM collection (D. Lees, personal communication), but it remains unknown whether these genitalia belong to the lectotype. Thus, A. Diakonoff studied a specimen of uncertain identity, which was selected by J. D. Bradley among specimens kept in the NHM collection under the name N. profusella .

Genitalia slide 1749 was prepared by J. D. Bradley in April 1949 from a specimen collected in Andai by W. Doherty in 1892 (specimen no. 41731). Based on external characters, I tentatively identified this specimen as N. neuguineae . However, it differs from the type series of N. neuguineae (described below) by having a shorter vinculum (2.6 vs. 3.4‒3.6 × length of valva in N. neuguineae) and a different shape of the apical processes of the phallus. To be cautious, I have placed this specimen and two others from the same series in other material of N. neuguineae instead of including them in the type series.

The record of N. profusella from Kokoda (Diakonoff 1955), based on an NHM specimen identified by A. Diakonoff in 1950, actually belongs to N. cheesmanae (see below). The latter species has complete yellow band, which contradicts the original description and Diakonoff’s (1955) key, where N. profusella is defined by a costal yellow spot.

Analysis of ten characters (FWL, WLR, extent of basal yellow field, position of internal margin of yellow band of fascia and its extent—both along costa and perpendicular to it, shape of yellow band or spot, extent and shape of dark brown bands on both sides of yellow band of fascia, and number of dark spots at outer wing margin) in 16 male specimens tentatively identified as N. profusella revealed that all differ from the lectotype by a greater extent of yellow colour in forewing fascia. While the yellow spot in the lectotype is only 0.35 × forewing width, it varied from 0.50 to 1.0 × forewing width across the studied males. Thus, there remains a possibility that specimens other than the lectotype belong to a distinct yet undescribed species. However, the absence of other differences in external traits, combined with substantial variation in forewing pattern of specimens originating from the same locality (Figs. 11‒15), makes the description of a new species premature.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6F72C74CFF8BFF96FF5BFF210F221649	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Nemophora cupriantennella differs from all species of the profusella group by the bifurcate ventral process at the tip of the phallus. It resembles N. sulawesiensis (Fig. 25) in the dark coppery colour of the entire male antenna, but differs from that species by the male compound eyes not touching each other posteriorly and by a relatively narrow forewing (WLR 0.35‒0.37). From the closely related N. cheesmanae (Figs. 30, 31), it differs by the relatively wide yellow band of fascia, short silver stripes in the yellow basal field of the forewing, and a very short epiphysis located at 0.45 of tibia.

Description. Male (Fig. 22). FWL 7.0‒ 7.2 mm; WLR 0.35. Vertex pale ochreous brown; frons glossy silver; piliform scales around antennal bases pale ochreous. PLB 0.6 × vertical eye diameter (1.2 × length of scape), light ochreous. Proboscis brown, basally thickened with coppery to bronze scales sometimes forming conspicuous brush. Eyes enlarged, occipitally approaching but not touching each other; interocular index 1.1‒1.2. Antenna 3.3 × FWL. Scape bronze; entire flagellum coppery brown. Tegula basally light golden, laterally ochreous yellow; thoracic dorsum light glossy golden. Forewing (Fig. 45) dark bronze with coppery lustre; pattern ochreous yellow and dark brown. Yellow colour expands from wing base to 0.25 × FWL along costa and 0.20 × FWL along dorsum; silver stripes in this basal field reach 0.17 × FWL; anal margin with thin black line. Yellow band of fascia wide at costa (0.18‒0.20 × FWL) and very narrow at dorsum (0.02‒0.03 × FWL); internal margin reaches costa at 0.39‒0.41 × FWL. This yellow band on both sides bordered by narrow lines of dark brown scales, which do not reach dorsum. Outer wing margin without spots. Fringe bronze. Hindwing dark brown; costal area grey; fringe brownish grey to grey. Legs dark bronze; apices of all segments with coppery tint; hind tibia with dense coppery brown piliform scales. Epiphysis at 0.45, very short, reaching only 0.8 of tibia. Abdomen dorsally light brown to brown, ventrally bronze to coppery bronze.

Female unknown.

Male genitalia (Figs. 61, 76). Tegumen dome-shaped, with prominent medial ridge. Socii 2.1‒2.2 × medial diameter of phallus. Vinculum 3.0‒3.1 × length of valva, V-shaped; lateral margins nearly straight; distal margin nearly straight to gently W-shaped. Tips of valvae and tegumen at about same level. Ventral margin of valva bent at 0.65‒0.70 × total length; dorsal margin slightly convex; tip of valva narrowly rounded. Ventral margins of valvae closely approach at 0.30‒0.35 × total length but are fused basally only up to 0.15 × total length, forming characteristic narrow V-shaped notch in distal parts of valvar bases; their internal margins distinct. Anellus 0.6‒0.7 × length of valva. Transtilla with moderately long medial process. Juxta 0.60‒0.65 × length of phallus; arrow head narrow (WLR 0.30‒0.40), with pointed apex and pointed lateral arms of moderate length. Phallus 1.00‒1.05 × length of vinculum; basal 0.7 of phallus nearly straight, apical third directed posteroventrally; tip of phallus with two processes: hook-shaped apical process and bifurcate ventral process with two gently curved arms; base of phallus bell-shaped.

Biology. The moths were collected in lower montane forests at two localities. Forest at the “Clarke” Camp (1140 m a.s.l.) included Agathis sp., Casuarina sp., Pandanus sp. and Calamus sp. At Gunung Muajat (1780 m a.s.l.), Lithocarpus sp. was one of the dominant species, Pandanus sp. was a frequent element of the canopy, and tree-ferns were noted on the ascent (O'Donovan et al. 1990).

Distribution. Indonesia (Sulawesi, Sangir).

Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from cupreus (Latin: coppery) and antenna (Latin: antenna) and refers to the diagnostic trait of this species.

Comments. Although Walsingham clearly labelled some of the N. cupriantennella paratypes as a new species from a new genus, he never published descriptions of either the species or the genus.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6F72C74CFF93FF8FFF5BFF2108491101	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. From N. illustrella (Fig. 29), which has a similar but less developed expansion of the apical process, N. sulawesiensis differs by the shorter anellus and a distinct lobe at the ventral margin of the valva.

Description. Male (Fig. 25). FWL 7.0‒ 7.8 mm; WLR 0.40. Vertex pale ochreous brown; frons light glossy golden, in some specimens with light green iridescence; piliform scales around antennal bases mostly dark brown, uppermost tuft sometimes pale ochreous. PLB 0.4 × vertical eye diameter (0.8‒1.1 × length of scape), light ochreous, dorsally with dark brown scales. Proboscis brown, basally thickened with coppery to bronze scales sometimes forming conspicuous brush. Eyes enlarged, occipitally touching each other; interocular index 1.5; occipital index 0. Antenna 3.7‒3.9 × FWL. Scape and basal quarter of flagellum black with coppery lustre; distal part of flagellum coppery brown. Tegula light golden basally, coppery to ochreous-yellow marginally; thoracic dorsum light glossy golden, in some specimens with dull yellow spots. Forewing (Fig. 47) dark coppery bronze with ochreous yellow and dark brown pattern. Yellow colour expands from wing base to 0.25 × FWL along costa and 0.15 × FWL along dorsum; silver stripes in basal field separated, reaching 0.15‒0.17 × FWL; anal margin without black scales. Yellow costal spot narrow (0.07‒0.08 × FWL); its length equals one third of forewing width; internal margin reaches costa at 0.35‒0.38 × FWL; spot bordered by dark brown lines, narrow internally and wide externally. Outer wing margin without spots. Fringe bronze. Hindwing dark brown; costal area grey; fringe brownish grey to grey. Abdomen brown, ventrally with bronze lustre in some specimens.

Female unknown.

Male genitalia (Figs. 63, 78). Tegumen dome-shaped, with prominent medial ridge. Socii 1.6‒1.8 × medial diameter of phallus. Vinculum 3.2‒3.6 × length of valva, V-shaped; lateral margins straight to slightly concave; distal margin characteristically wave-shaped. Tip of tegumen at about same level as tips of valvae or slightly extends beyond them. Ventral margin of valva sharply bent at 0.7 × total length; dorsal margin convex; tip of valva narrowly rounded. Ventral margins of valvae closely approach at 0.30‒0.35 × total length but fused only up to 0.15‒0.18 × total length, forming narrow notch with parallel margins in distal parts of valvar bases; their internal margins indistinct. Anellus 0.35 × length of valva. Transtilla with long medial process. Juxta 0.6‒0.7 × length of phallus; arrow head narrow (WLR 0.35‒0.40), with pointed apex and long, narrow, sharply pointed lateral arms. Phallus 1.0 × length of vinculum, nearly straight; tip directed posteroventrally, with two processes: apical process hook-shaped, very wide distally, with serrate anteroventral margin; ventral process (in lateral view) longer than apical process, thin, wave-shaped; base of phallus funnel-shaped.

Biology. The moths were collected in both lowland and low montane forests. Strangling fig ( Ficus sp.) was one of the main top canopy trees near Base Camp (200‒300 m a.s.l.); other abundant species included Macaranga sp., Saribus rotundifolius, Pometia pinnata, Garcinia sp., Calophyllum sp., Myristica sp. and Celtis sp. Dense thickets were formed by Calamus sp. At Hog's Back Camp (492 m a.s.l.) S. rotundifolius was more common than at Base Camp often formed a canopy, whereas Calamus sp. was less abundant. The summit of Gunung Mogogonipa (1008 m a.s.l.) was covered by a cloud forest dominated by Lithocarpus sp. and tree ferns ( Cyathea sp.), with dense ground flora of ferns including Hymenophyllum sp. and Selaginella sp. (O'Donovan et al. 1990). Moths were collected both during the day and at light.

Distribution. Indonesia (Sulawesi).

Etymology. The species is named after the type locality, Sulawesi Island.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6F72C74CFF97FF83FF5BFE240FFB1355	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Valvae fused basally up to 0.25‒0.35 × total length; their internal margins indistinct; fused part of valvae without a medial notch. Anellus 0.6‒0.7 × length of valva. Transtilla with moderately long medial process. Juxta 0.50‒0.65 × length of phallus; arrow head narrow (WLR 0.30‒0.50), with pointed apex and long pointed lateral arms. Phallus 0.95‒ 1.00 × length of vinculum, nearly straight, distal quarter directed posteroventrally, with two processes of about same length: apical process directed laterally, ventral process forms a loop with dorsally oriented distal part; base of phallus narrowly bell-shaped.

Distribution. Indonesia (Papua), Papua New Guinea.

Etymology. The species is named after Lucy Evelyn Cheesman (1881‒1969), an entomologist and explorer who collected the holotype.

Comments. The holotype of N. cheesmanae was identified by A. Diakonoff as N. profusella (see the comment to the latter species).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6F72C74CFFA1FFB8FF5BFDF00D7A11C9	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Nemophora xanthobasella is most similar to N. s ulawesiensis (Fig. 25), from which it differs by the more distal position of the yellow costal spot in the forewing, the absence of dark brown scales around it, the short vinculum, the smooth (without a distinct lobe: in lateral view) ventral margin of the valva and the narrow apical processes of the phallus.

Description. Male (Fig. 32). FWL 6.8 mm; WLR 0.36. Vertex and piliform scales around antennal bases pale ochreous brown; frons light glossy golden, with green iridescence. PLB 0.4 × vertical eye diameter, light ochreous brown, ventrally with sparse raised ochreous scales. Proboscis brown, basally thickened with ochreous brown to bronze scales forming conspicuous brush. Eyes enlarged, posteriorly touching each other; interocular index 1.6; occipital index 0. Antenna>2.2 × FWL, with simple inwardly directed pegs. Scape externally coppery brown, internally ochreous brown; basal 5‒10 flagellomeres brown, with rings of dark coppery brown scales; distal part of flagellum (from about 0.3 × FWL) white to light grey dorsally, bronze ventrally. Tegula bronze basally, yellow marginally; thoracic dorsum light glossy golden. Forewing (Fig. 52) dark bronze, apically with coppery tint; pattern bright yellow. Yellow colour expands from wing base to 0.25 × FWL along costa and 0.15 × FWL along dorsum; silver stripes in basal field isolated, reaching 0.13 × FWL; anal margin without black scales. Yellow spot narrow (0.07‒0.08 × FWL); its length equals about half of forewing width; internal margin reaches costa at 0.45 × FWL; spot not bordered by dark brown lines.
