Although Zajciw (1957) used the species-group name as masculine— Erythrochiton nigrosignatus Zajciw, 1957 —, as in other species of the genus, it has been used sometimes as masculine and sometimes as neuter. The only species described with a neuter gender and never subsequently mentioned with a masculine ending is Erythrochiton rubronigrum Napp & Santos, 1996 . However, according to Beekes (2010: 1635): “Χιτών, -ῶνος [m.] ‘chiton’, designation of a garment without sleeves, which was worn directly on the body, ‘body-garment, shirt’ (Il.).” Therefore: E. jucundus (Gounelle, 1913); E. nigrosignatus Zajciw, 1957; E. rubroniger Napp & Santos, 1996; and E. sellatus (Buquet, 1844), are the correct species names (ICZN 1999: 32.1).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6B718786CC30FFA0FF5AFB43FBB9B355	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Kolobophora dolia, new species, herein designated.

Etymology. From the Greek “ κολοβός” (kolobos), meaning “curtailed,” and the suffix “-φόρος” (-phoros), meaning “bearer of;” alluding to the short elytra. Feminine gender.

Description. Male. Head moderately short. Frons transverse, longitudinally carinate laterally. Antennal tubercles distant from each other; apex slightly projected backward posteriorly. Eyes moderately finely faceted; upper eye lobes distinctly distant from each other, not distinctly widened from area of connection between eye lobes. Genae about as long as length of lower eye lobes in frontal view. Apex of maxillary palpomere IV and labial palpomere III truncate. Antennae 11-segmented, reaching about apex of abdomen; scape cylindrical, shorter than antennomere III, without dorsal depressions; antennomeres III–VI with angulate outer apex; flagellomeres without tuft of setae, elongated. Prothorax longer than wide; anterior constriction narrow, distinctly; sides divergent from anterior constriction to middle, then rounded and widened; lacking lateral tubercles. Pronotum without tubercles or distinct gibbosities; anterior third triangularly depressed centrally. Prosternum without modifications. Procoxal cavities open laterally, distinctly open posteriorly. Prosternal process with narrowest area narrower than half of procoxal width. Mesoventral process wider than mesocoxal width. Scutellum rounded posteriorly. Elytra reaching metacoxae; outer sides slightly concave centrally; sutural margins distinctly divergent on anterior third, subparallelsided on posterior 2/3; apex slightly obliquely truncate and slightly concave centrally, with outer angle and sutural angles rounded; lacking humeral and dorsal carinae. Trochanters lacking apical projection. Femora pedunculate clavate; mesofemora slightly longer than profemora; metafemora distinctly longer than mesofemora, notably surpassing abdominal apex. Tibiae gradually longer from forelegs to hind legs. Metatibiae with dense tuft of erect setae on apical half, setae distinctly sparser on sides; slightly arched basally; with slight notch just before middle of ventral surface. Metatarsi about as long as metatibia; metatarsomere I distinctly longer than II–III together, lacking dense tuft of erect setae. Abdominal ventrite 1 shorter than 2–3 together; abdominal ventrite 5 shorter than ventrite 4, with rounded apex.

Females unknown.

Remarks. Among the genera of Rhopalophorini, only Brachylophora has distinctly short elytra. In fact, the holotype of the new species was found among specimens of B. auricollis during the identification of a specimen of the latter.

Kolobophora gen. nov. differs from Brachylophora as follows: prosternal process distinctly narrower, narrowest area about one-fourth procoxal width; metatibiae not strongly arched basally and with distinct tuft of setae on apical half; metatibia slightly notched on ventral surface. In Brachylophora, the prosternal process is wider, with the narrowest area about half the procoxal width, and the metatibiae are distinctly arched basally, lack a tuft of erect setae, and has a distinct notch slightly before the middle of the ventral surface.

Kolobophora resembles some genera of Rhinotragini with short elytra. However, the extremely long metatarsus, particularly metatarsomere I, is not present in species of Rhinotragini, which allows its exclusion from this tribe. There are species in Rhinotragini with the metatarsus long, as for example, in species of Agaone Pascoe, 1869 . However, it is never so long as in Kolobophora, Coremia Audinet-Serville, 1834, and Brachylophora . Clarke (2011) provided a long argument to consider Brachylophora as a genus of Rhopalophorini instead to Rhinotragini, and concluded: “In conclusion, the monotypic genus, Brachylophora, should be considered a member of the Rhopalophorini because it shares many primary characters with other members of this tribe, few primary characters differing from this tribe and, apart from the short elytra, few primary characters with the Rhinotragini .”

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/6B718786CC34FFA4FF5AFF1AFB94B3A6	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Syn. nov.

Remarks. Blanchard (1847) described Poecilosoma intricatum from the Bolivian department of Santa Cruz, and Lucas (1859) described Poecilosoma haemoptera (see photograph) from the Brazilian states of Goiás and Mato Grosso. The first thing that should be noted is that the Department of Santa Cruz and the state of Mato Grosso share a border, and there is no significant geographic barrier between them. It seems that, to date, the option has been if a specimen is from Bolivia, it is P. intricatus and if a specimen is from Brazil or Argentina, it is P. haemopterus . However, when specimens from these two regions are examined, a great variation can be observed in several features, especially in the color of the pronotum and in the pattern of the black areas on the elytra (Figs 13–17). Furthermore, females also show considerable variation in the sculpture of the pronotum (Figs 18–20). None of these variations are related to geographic distribution. Consequently, it is not possible to consider that the specimens occurring outside Bolivia belong to a different species. Therefore, we are synonymizing P. haemopterus under P. intricatus .

Known distribution. Gilmour reported the type locality of Lepturges fasciculatoides as follows: “Locality: BRAZIL: Susuapara (Ch. Pujol) (1952, Coll. R. Oberthür).” Monné (2024b) listed: “Type locality— Holotype male: Brazil, Susuapara [Goiás, Sussuapara?].” We did not find a place in Brazil named “Susuapara.” However, there are at least two places in Brazil named “Sussuapara:” a city in the Brazilian state of Piauí; and a canyon in the Brazilian state of Tocantins. We know that Charles Pujol, the collector of the holotype, was in the Northeast region of Brazil (he also collected the holotype of Lepturges dorotheae Gilmour, 1962 in a locality named Cachimbo, in the Brazilian state of Bahia). However, he also stood in the Brazilian state of Goiás because he collected paratypes of Lepturges (Chaeturges) villiersi Gilmour, 1962 in Jataí. At that time, the state of Goiás included the Jalapão State Park, where the Sussuapara Canyon is located. Tocantins was created on October 5, 1988, following the division of Goiás. Consequently, the provenance of the holotype of L. fasciculatoides cannot be determined. However, we consider the Brazilian state of Tocantins to be the most probable origin. This is because, in the late nineteenth century, Sussuapara in Piauí was a very remote area in the northeastern hinterland, which would have made it unattractive for insect collecting.

The male illustrated by Monné et al. (2020) as Lepturges (Lepturges) elegantulus was misidentified in the MZSP collection; it is actually a male of L. fasciculatoides .

Known distribution. The specimens from Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo examined by us (e.g. Figs 29–32), as well as the holotype (from Brazil, without further details)—deposited in the MNHN and examined through photographs—, have brownish dorsal and ventral pubescence. Specimens from Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul (e.g. Figs 33–36) have grayish pubescence on both surfaces, notably on the dorsal surface. However, we were unable to find any other reliable morphological feature to separate them into two species. Thus, we conclude that this is merely intraspecific variation. Moreover, the number of examined specimens is very small (one from Mato Grosso do Sul; two from Mato Grosso; three from Espírito Santo; and two from Rio de Janeiro), preventing any assessment of whether the geographic distribution of the differently colored forms is consistent.Although the three specimens with grayish dorsal pubescence have shorter elytral setae, we examined a specimen with brownish dorsal pubescence in which the setae are also shorter. Furthermore, there is slight variation in the body shape and proportions, sculpturing of the pronotum, distance between the upper eye lobes, and in the width of the prosternal and mesoventral processes among the brownish specimens. Therefore, if they represent two species, it is not possible to separate them except by the color of the pubescence. In general appearance, the grayish pubescence form resembles Drycothaea dozieri Wappes, Santos-Silva & Galileo, 2018, but in that species the tubercle of the mesoventral process is virtually absent, and the antennae in females are proportionally shorter.

We provide photographs of two females representing the two chromatic forms. We believe this may assist other researchers who have specimens—especially of both forms from the same region—in studying them and determining whether they represent two species, two subspecies, or simply variations of a single species.

Known distribution.
