Upperside red; pronotum at disc, scutellum and abdomen often infuscated (Fig. 1).

Head transverse. Eyes small, interocular distance noticeably greater than eye diameter. Labrum small, transverse, convex anteriorly. Palps short; ultimate palpomeres elongate, almost parallel-sided, only slightly widening distally, apically flattened and glabrous. Antennal sockets separated by moderately wide lamina. Antennae moderately long, reaching over mid-elytra, filiform, except conical and widening distally antennomeres 2 and 3; antennomeres 2 and 3 subequal in length and considerably shorter than antennomere 4, antennomeres 4–11 with relatively long erect pubescence (Figs 1, 3).

Pronotum transverse, in most cases convex anteriorly, with acute posterior and blunt anterior angles; median cell rhomboidal, with slightly concave posterior sides. Scutellum with minute emargination distally (Fig. 2).

Elytra long, slightly widening distally, non-dehiscent at suture, with four complete longitudinal costae and double rows of small regular sub-rectangular cells in the interstices; pubescence uniform, short, dense and sub-erect (Fig. 1).

Legs moderately long; hind trochanters noticeably longer than wide, prolonged and, in most cases, spinose at hind angle; hind femurs often stout and noticeably shorter than hind tibiae, hind tibiae narrow and straight (Fig. 3).

Aedeagus elongate, oval in dorsoventral view, with elongate, straight, relatively narrow, in dorsoventral view and slightly curved distally, in lateral view, median lobe; parameres slightly shorter than median lobe, open ventrally and proximally fused dorsally, with prominent inwardly directed tooth; phallobase, in dorsoventral view, elongate, oval, without median suture (Fig. 7).

Female. More robust than males, with relatively broader pronotum and elytra, somewhat stouter and shorter antennae; hind trochanters less elongate (Figs 4, 5 A, B). Ultimate ventrite (sternite 8) with narrow spiculum ventrale, subequal in length to the sternite proper (Fig. 5 C – E). External genitalia with elongate styli, elongate parallel-side coxites and long narrow valvifers; valvifers distally loosely connected to elongate bullet-shaped sternite 10; apices of styli and coxites with elongate erect setae (Fig. 6).

Distribution.

Eastern Nepal, East Asia, North America.

Remarks.

The species initially attributed to Punicealis were listed with names in masculine (Kazantsev 1993 b), whereas they should have been coordinated in gender with the genus (which was Dictyoptera, feminine), not with the subgenus (e. g. Kazantsev (2025)). This renders the initial gender designation inapplicable. Later, when the status of Punicealis was raised, all the names of its species represented by an adjective were explicitly considered to be feminine (Kazantsev 2004, 2012 a).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/BCB411B62D3C5D3AA1B3A0359414F43A	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. In Japan, P. medvedevi seems to be confined to mountain forest, for example, on the slopes of Mt. Ishizuchi, the summit of which towers over the surrounding landscape at 1,982 m a. s. l., Mt. Amagi (Nakane 1969), the summit of which is over 1,300 m a. s. l. or in Mennoki Pass, at 1,100 m a. s. l., whereas in the Russian Far East, both in the continental southern Primorskij Krai and the southern Kuril Islands, the species has been collected at altitudes from just slightly over 100 m a. s. l to several hundred metres. In Japan, its adults emerge in May – early June, while in the Russian Far East, they are registered in June through July, apparently due to a later spring.

Remarks.

This species was erroneously referred to as Dictyoptera oculata (Gorham, 1883) in the revisional work on the net-winged beetle fauna of Japan (Nakane 1969). An examination of the type of Eros oculatus Gorham from the Natural History Museum (London), however, made it clear that it is different from D. oculata sensu Nakane 1969, the two species not even belonging in a single genus (Kazantsev 1993 a).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/AB9689BA23505130BB1998F8C7FE1F4E	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
